    When to change plugs?

plug change Personally I would change them at 50,000 as well as the wires [if your wires look like the original ones]. I buy the lifetime warranty plug wires as I keep my vehicles a long time, and I keep getting free sets after that ;) .

    No Headlights

Rod, yes he does have a shop here in Portland. The name of the shop is Gary's Auto Care, 233 NE Columbia Bulevard, PH 503-286-9851. His name is Duwayne, and he said to call ahead to make sure he is not on vacation, and it would be best to leave the vehicle for a couple of days to diagnose the...

Blend door problem in 1997 or not?

OK, it turned out to be the clutch in my compressor. I took it to my friend the tech foreman for a shop. Let me know if anyone wants to know how he diagnosed it. Thanks again Horseplay for your efforts.

Thanks for the tip, I will look at that tomorrow. :)

Blend door problem in 1997 or not?

I apologize if this is not appropriate to ask in this forum. My other vehicle is a 1997 Mustang GT, and I think it has all the symptoms of the broken blend door in the plenum[ie: warm air instead of airconditioning] dealt with here with the great fix posted. When it first occured I noticed some...

My 2002 Explorer Sport is giving problems shifting into first gear. Help!

Aren't you still under warranty? I wouldn't try to fix anything while still under warranty, it would void it.

    Sorry, starter draw :D

00' won't start most of time.

My first guess would be the battery, it having enough charge for the interior lights, but not enough for the starer draw. I would check it first.

    Chirping noise around serpentine belt

Best way I have found to determine if the belt is the cause is to wet it down. Main thing is not to get hit by the fan, so is much safer to start with motor stopped. I usually throw a partial pail of water right on the belt [with the motor stopped]and restart to see if the sound stops. If the...

New engine?? I need advice please!

addendum I haven't put in a remanufactured engine for a few years, but at that time I found the best prices at Shucks Auto supply, and I got a 7 year warranty with it. It is still running great in my '85 T-Bird, although it is time to sell it as I have too many vehicles with the recent addition...

New engine?? I need advice please!

I too would go for the reman. engine. Used is really to unreliable. And I wouldn't get a shop to rebuild the engine, as they can't do it as cheap as the reman. engine builders who have an assemby line, also takes a lot longer waiting for the block to come back from the machine shop etc.. If a...

    No Power

I am thinking it is the battery, as a fully charged one should be 12.6 - 13.2 volts, not just 12 volts. Check out this site. http://www.inct.net/~autotips/batterm.htm Good luck. Joe

    An onslaught of questions:

Re: engine clean Re: engine clean. Best stuff out there is "Castrol Super Clean", degreases like you wouldn't believe. Plastic bags over sensors tho, before you start. Spray it on right at one of those car washes where you use a wand to clean it yourself. Let it sit for 5 minutes after...

    Cargo mat

Thankyou for the reply. I did see a great Husky liner at a truck accesory store here in Portland today, but wondered if I could find something a little cheaper. It was $125, and it didn't have the velcro holders that held your cargo in one place. However being waterproof is the most important...

    Cargo mat

Looking at cargo mats for 2003 Explorer Sport[2 door]. Has anyone purchased the ones at Explorer Express and can give some feedback as to quality and customer service experience? I am hoping that these are waterproof as well. The site I am looking at is...

    Somke from the vents!!

When the pressure built up in your cooling system, before the cap blew, it may have blown a hole in your heater core. That could explain the smell coming from the vents, and the film on the inside of your windshield probably is antifreeze. The "smoke" is probably a fog of antifreeze particles.

    Anyone can steal your X

Actally true, saw a documentary on it the other night, where undercover reporters went to dealers and got keys for vehicles with VIN #. No ID, no proof of ownership. Some dealers followed the rules, but some gave keys. What I was not sure of is whether these keys made included ones that have the...

    Tick! Tick! Tick!

Both of you are right of course. I just hate having to keep opening up the same engine. Seems like top end work restores proper compression with the valves closing properly, then the next thing that goes are the rings that can't handle the increased compression . Or the timing chain goes, or...

    Tick! Tick! Tick!

I suppose I go a little overboard, but if my engine had somewhat major problems at that mileage, I would go for the remanufactured long block. Once it is in, you should have another 135K miles of pretty much trouble free driving, at least in the engine area. I have had two reman. engines [two...

    Help with spark plugs

It cleans and can cut new threads if not too damaged. Looks like one on this site http://www.mfgsupply.com/m/c/32-9031.html . If it doesn't work, it won't cost much to try it. This next site gives some pretty good advice on how to use it. It may be able to cut new threads if the old ones are not...

    Remote locking screwed

Man, I wish I knew more about the remote circuit. I would start by checking that the fuse does not have an intermittent break in it. The expanding metal if cracked in the fuse could be affected by the ambient temp, and could account for the intermittent nature of the problem. I would rule that...

    Help with spark plugs

You could try using a spark plug hole thread chaser. I would make sure the piston is a the top, and put thick grease around the threads to catch any metal filings that might fall back into the cylinder. Then clean the grease out of the threads, along with the metal filinings, before you thread...

    Rough idle after deceleration...

This is probably way off, but if the stumble stops as soon as the brake is released, I would wonder about the power brake assist [runs off vacuum]. There is a slim chance that the vacuum assist is sucking in air thru a leak when the brake is depressed. I would let off the brake as soon as the...

    PLEASE HELP WONT START

If a wired popped off, there is a chance that it blew out a coil pack. There are lot of volts in these coil packs and if it can't get to ground the normal way thru the wire and plug to ground, it can short thru the coil pack to the block to complete the ground on that cylinder's power stroke. I...

    Cargo liner advise

Anyone have advise on the best cargo liner, for an Explorer Sport 2003[the 2 door]? I would like one that is flexible, non skid, and as the color of the Ex is gold, something in a similiar color would be nice for my wife lol. I am thinking of one that would cover just the floor, not the sides of...

    PLEASE HELP WONT START

I would determine if I am getting spark. I use a timing light with inductive pickup, and see if it flashes. Or a test spark plug that has the right resistance and designed for testing, and is clamped to the block to ground it. I wouldn't pull a wire and crank it to see spark as it could blow out...

    Car Wont Start - Click,Click,Click

Personally I would not charge a fully discharged battery with the car alternator. My understanding is that the alternator is not built to put out the amp's at full charge for the length of time needed to recharge the battery. It frequently can burn out one or more diodes in the process. I charge...

    Explorer runs badly

OK, I called a friend who makes a living diagnosing vehicle problems[other guys do the actual repairs in the shop,he diagnoses the problems]. He indicated that if both banks are lean, it is unlikely that it is the oxygen sensor. He indicated that it certainly could be a vacuum leak, most likely...

    Explorer runs badly

To check the sensors, the computer needs to be scanned. I am not sure if you have OBD11 or not, I think they changed to that in most cars in 1996 according to this site http://www.obdii.com/connector.html . You can get it scanned for free at some auto parts stores if OBD11. This should give...

    exhaust smells like sulfur

I believe the major cause of cat failure is running a rich mixture [which is what gives the sulphur smell]. If your sulphur smell is still present IMO you are running a rich mixture, and the rich unburned fuel will burn in your cat causing it to overheat and melt down. I would run the OBD 2 scan...

Steering wheel sticky - what's up with it?

I once tried Armorall on a similiar steering wheel, it made it so slippery it was hard to steer. I would go with the cover idea. I believe that part of the breaking down of the steering wheel surface is due to the acids on all our hands.
