    1998 Explorer 5.0 “Restoration2021” project

So after just about a year of driving we've encountered the first real problem. The EX started to overheat last night. My daughter made it to my house. And it was low on coolant. It was late and dark but I can see coolant is leaking from somewhere. But very slowly. But I have to chase this down...

04 Ford Explorer transmission was replaced

Have you inspected the main wiring harness that attaches to the trans? I've had a couple explorers of that era that I have rebuilt the trans that I've had to replace that whole pigtail because most all the insulation had fallen off. I believe Rostra makes the replacement pigtail. Also is this...

    2022 ST vs King Ranch?

I ordered an ST in November of 21. It arrived end or February 2022. We added the 2nd row bench seat. We drove it to Salt lake City Utah for the ST driving experience. about 477 miles each way to and from Vegas. I found it very comfortable. The bench seat is good for the extra people in our...

Next up is the cam position sensor. Which was discussed a few weeks ago. After that will be trans fluid/filter and a Jmod. Then there really won't be any old up keep to deal with. It will all be post Driving/restoration.

    1998 Explorer 5.0 “Restoration2021” project

Changed all the pads and rotors this week. As well replaced the parking brake shoes and did an oil change. Good news is after 6 months, the EX didn’t lose any oil. Shows no signs of leaking on the engine or rear end. So all the work done to date is holding. Everything looks good.

    1998 Explorer 5.0 “Restoration2021” project

Thanks for the input guys. When I did the timing cover I had discovered that someone had previously broke one of the left side water pump bolts and just left it there. Other than removing that broken bolt nothing else was much trouble. So I think I'll be alright. Probably do this job in a few weeks.

    1998 Explorer 5.0 “Restoration2021” project

The engine was not rebuilt. I went through about 90% of the entire Explorer. It's well documented in this thread. I used the word rebuild because most of the folks that have already read all the posts know what I mean. I apologize if I'm being confusing. In this Explorer, I replaced the oil pan...

    1998 Explorer 5.0 “Restoration2021” project

So the EX presented codes p0340 and P1309 for the camshaft synchronizer. I'm going to get a new cam synchro. But I'm considering replacing the intake manifold gaskets at the same time. That was one of the things that I didn't do during the rebuild. At the time If I had known in November that I...

You are taking my comment the wrong way. I'm not telling you to pound sand. I've enjoyed your comments as well as everyone elses during this build. Please keep in mind I said the pinion seal was absolutely leaking. If it wasn't I'd have left it alone. I also didn't say you were wrong or that I...

    1998 Explorer 5.0 “Restoration2021” project

Latest update. No pictures. Yesterday we changed the pinion seal, axle bearings, axle seals and gear lube on the EX project. Everything went smoothly. The pinion seal was leaking. But thankfully the pinion bearing looks very good despite the leak. The axle seals weren't leaking at all, we just...

Rear Wheel Drive vs. Intelligent 4WD

I don't have the specific info on the 2022 explorer your looking for. But as to why someone would want RWD versus 4WD, I'll say this. Generally 4wd costs more to buy new, over time costs more to maintain, and if one doesn't "use" 4wd, do you need to pay for it. Also I'm sure if you like to go...

    Ordered a 2022 ST

FYI the massaging seats are really nice! We have the High brake package and those things really grab. I need to relearn my braking style to accomodate them. Because when you put your foot in it can make your head hurt slowing down. FYI while I love driving fast, I'm very measured behind the...
