1998 Explorer 5.0 “Restoration2021” project

Changed all the pads and rotors this week. As well replaced the parking brake shoes and did an oil change. Good news is after 6 months, the EX didn’t lose any oil. Shows no signs of leaking on the engine or rear end. So all the work done to date is holding. Everything looks good.

@SuperGordo Good to know! I love following a good build thread, particularly when everything comes together easily. At least we know somebody's having a good time!

Just thought of you and your Explorer yesterday bro ! .... "wonder how she's doing" ....:dunno:
I just got two things resolved with mine in the last week.... good feeling...

Next up is the cam position sensor. Which was discussed a few weeks ago. After that will be trans fluid/filter and a Jmod. Then there really won't be any old up keep to deal with. It will all be post Driving/restoration.

Easily?? hehehe.. my best friend and I really turned the needle on this EX. But my daughter is having all the fun driving it!! I took it for a drive before and after the brakes....wish I had built it for myself...

It's doing well! Glad you hear you are getting things done on yours! Progress is always good!

@SuperGordo Easily, relative to hack, slash and weld jobs that require using parts from half a dozen other Explorers! :P

So after just about a year of driving we've encountered the first real problem. The EX started to overheat last night. My daughter made it to my house. And it was low on coolant. It was late and dark but I can see coolant is leaking from somewhere. But very slowly. But I have to chase this down very shortly.

Worth noting that it's likely a loose hose clamp. I can see a light amount of coolant on the serpentine belt. Everything else is dry. I pressure tested the system and nothing came out. So we'll see.

on my SOHC the worm gear clamps like to loosen up every once in a while

Check that water pump.

Water pump may have a weep hole if it’s leaking from there it’s time for a new waterpump

The coolant went somewhere!

I will check the water pump, but I did replace it when I put this EX together. But new stuff does go bad, so we'll see.
And thankfully no water in the oil!:)

Had a decent look at the EX today. I did find some loose hose clamps that were leaking. I tightened those and pressure tested. Seemed to stop them. My daughter is dropping the EX off to me Friday night. Saturday I will pull off the fan and check every hose clamp. As well I need to change the cam synchronizer. I also intend to replace the intake manifold gaskets while I have it. That was one of those things I didn't do during the initial restoration.
