Project Hazey
Got Hazey's roof touched up to day. Some of the OSPHO dripped or ran, discoloring the paint around the rusted areas, but whatever, I'll take any color rather than rust. It does NOT look pretty, but it'll give it at least a few more years before I've got to worry about it. Checked the ABS...- DintDobbs

@Explorer2.0 Excuse me, but you have missed the point. I'm not trying to make the lights stop flashing, man. I'm trying to fix my Control Trac. My T-case shifts into and out of all modes just fine, as I've posted already in this thread - the torque-on-demand function is already disabling...- DintDobbs

Here's my theory. The Control Trac probably disables because two sensors are not providing information (reason to be determined) to the GEM, so it cannot detect slippage as it should. The ABS probably still works because the sensors not providing information does not equal a malfunction, to...- DintDobbs

To be proper, I have to correct my prior statement - what O'Reilly gave me earlier was listed on their scanner as ABS codes, not T-case codes. I made a few test runs to day, and checked the Vulture's systems using the same scanner, once before the lights flashed and several times after the...- DintDobbs

Finally found a scanner that gave me the T-case codes! Good old O'Reilly Auto Parts, coming through in the hardest times. Good on ya, laddies! Gas Mileage Improvement
@QUIXO777 Congratulations, you revived a thread that sat untouched for 16 years! That's the oldest revival I've ever seen. You also made an other world record, you actually got a good conversation going under it. Almost went for three records - nobody mentioning the ancient thread revival. 2...- DintDobbs

5.0 rear gear ratio options
@jd4242 For what this is worth (having read the rest of this thread) all the V8 Ex's at the junk yard (somewhere in the scope of 3) had axle code D4, 3.73 limited slip. I saw many other axle codes on many other Explorers, but only D4 on the V8's. @boominXplorer Good on ya, you've found the...- DintDobbs

5.0 rear gear ratio options
@jd4242 Nah, pretty sure the 3.55 was an option, may be not for every year or something, but I'm positively sure I've seen some of the guys here with 5.0's and 3.55's... unless they swapped different gears in and went taller and not shorter (nobody here should be doing that).- DintDobbs

5.0 rear gear ratio options
@jd4242 Hmm, this is a very interesting question. If my memory serves me correctly, the 5.0 was only available with the 3.73, 3.55, and perhaps 3.27 ratios, but I don't remember why I think that. https://www.explorerforum.com/ntrprize/Axle.htm This page contains a list of all the axle codes...- DintDobbs

Major help needed
@EdwardB I found that AFTER turning the headlamp switch OFF and AFTER removing the key from the ignition, if you can hold the mirror still with one hand, you can force the slider on the mirror past the farthest left position, and that will cut the headlamps. Welp, pushed it off until after the bad weather was over, changed the VSS on the rear diff for the one from Hazey, and the Hi/Lo six flashes persists. I'll try the sensors on the T-case next, trade out parts one by one with known-good ones from Hazey until the problem is isolated. It's...- DintDobbs

"Clifford" The Big Red Truck
@traveler Not to steal your thread, but if the horn on yours is the same as the one I took, it should be easily accessible when you put the hood up, on the passenger side of the radiator support. Rusted rear end corner (behind lamps)
@slisman I see that others have already spoken on this topic, but as far as space is concerned, I wouldn't hazard a guess. I don't weld, nor can I speak for the size of anybody's hands. Hello, looking to learn and observe.
@Slammed96X A side graphic with silver and a medium or dark green or blue might look good. Yellow or red or purple, if you really want to catch eyes. I love me some mini trucks, just can't justify owning one myself.- DintDobbs

Rusted rear end corner (behind lamps)
@slisman I can't tell how deep the rust goes, from the photographs. If you have a Sawzall or can weld, you could slice the portion that you need to replace off one at the junk yard (if they'll let you) and just have that section welded onto yours by a body shop, if you don't want to cut into...- DintDobbs

Hello, looking to learn and observe.
@Slammed96X Agreed, ditch the door mud guards, and definitely agreed, if new paint, same color! I vote for chrome rather than black; generally not a fan of chrome, but with that color it looks great! Would you consider adding some other side graphic, or going to keep her clean?- DintDobbs

@donalds Right on, followed the circuit board and ran a bit of wire from slot "1" to slot "3" on both connectors, and the horn works again. Played with the VSS to day, cleaned it up nice and good, didn't get to the relays because of other things going on around the house to day. The test drive still showed the same 6 flashes, so the VSS being dirty wasn't the problem. I did poke straight down into the hole, and felt tiny gear...- DintDobbs

@BennyBauer Yeah, a cop search will tear stuff up in a car, for sure! Any of the things that particularly bother you, you can always look around for junk yard parts. @Fix4Dirt To build on this detail of controversy, both of my X's have code K in that section. @joney I DM'd a rather lengthy explanation of those topics, so as not to go off-topic here. Hello, looking to learn and observe.
@Slammed96X Welcome to our collective back yard! That is one slick ride. The wheels perfect the look, not too big, not too small. What size is that, 18's? If you're of an experimental mind, I'd suggest checking out clear lamp lenses, I think it would complement the chrome well!- DintDobbs

Riding down the freeway
@joney The Sport has a 102" wheelbase, down from the 112" on the 4-doors. Even the 112" WB is a lot shorter than many sedans, and the steering angle on these 2nd-gens is unrivaled. Always got to respect the narrow track and high center of gravity, that's just good sense. Tire-wise, if you...- DintDobbs

@joney Going to say "Both" to this one. Given peace of mind on front-end and suspension components and the vehicle's driving characteristics, I'll take any vehicle to any speed, on the freeways. @TrackAire Nice testing and records, this could be useful info for 1st and 2nd-gens! I don't care what the external temp is, I only run the air conditioner when I have passengers. @BennyBauer She's one beautiful beast! 167k is surprisingly low, for a 2nd-gen. What engine have you got? Got a quote on painting Hazey's roof, after I deal with this rust. There's not much rust to see, but I tend to freak out when I see it.
