Newbie has an appointment to buy his first explorer tomorrow, a little help!
Mine's a 2nd-gen, but the spare tire winch is basically identical between 1st and 2nd. Basically, you have a winch cable with a T-piece at the end; you insert the jack handle with the hook on the end into the hole above the bumper (the tail gate has to be open in order to see the hole) and use...- DintDobbs

Newbie has an appointment to buy his first explorer tomorrow, a little help!
@fabianoliver If it's already been painted, that's probably part of what sets the price - a good paint job can be very expensive. For comparison, as RangerX said, that $3400 in USD could buy you JUST a decent paint job without the free car included, where I come from. I just bought a loaded 2000...- DintDobbs

Newbie has an appointment to buy his first explorer tomorrow, a little help!
Welcome to our collective back yard! Always good to see a fresh Explorer owner around! Little things, but check all the seals on the doors and windows. My 2nd-gen Sport leaks at the sun roof, and water comes in through the overhead console and at the left rear interior panel. After nearly 30...- DintDobbs

Rear Diff Rebuild Parts
@C420sailor GG's! Congrats on doing it yourself, I had to pay a garage for mine (regearing)... Expensive! Changing the diff oil after a short period is a good idea. I went with Yukons on mine, which recommend a break-in period of 500 miles... Proper break-in and then maintenance is paramount to...- DintDobbs

Tire replacement
If it's a P and not an LT, it can't possibly be more than a couple hundred to replace. Grab a pair, and a matching spare wheel, and then ditch the original steel spare with the 9-year-old tire. If you haven't been rotating it in and using it regularly, it's not road-worthy. There's a reason...- DintDobbs

No Spark and Stumped!
@FredFranzwa Not calling you out, but you didn't mention the condition of your spark plugs and wires... Might be looking for a big problem where there's a little problem. Not likely they'd all give no spark at the same time, but make sure they're all connected securely and in good shape. Also a...- DintDobbs

Pulled a long night and decided to put my trucks back together now, in stead of waiting until morning. Nice to have gauge lights again! Unsurprisingly, Hazey's dash cover had been abused prior to my purchase, and most of the little clips and the eyes for the bolts fell out when I took the...- DintDobbs

All the small ones (CEL, ABS, E-brake, seat belt, air bag, etc.) work, as far as I know - it's the big ones that light the gauges that are acting up. I know all the ones in the Vulture worked when bought, and with the other thrashing around it's been through, it wouldn't be surprising if like...- DintDobbs

Subwoofer checked out, definitely looks like the original one still hangin' in there. Makes a nasty scratchy rattle every so often, but meh, not a high priority. Score on the battery though, Advance DieHard Gold with some kind of aftermarket connectors on the cables. Isn't 850 CCA a little overkill? Who cares, she cranks up nice! Well, I traced that little yellow wire with the in-line 10-amp fuse to a small black box located underneath the left tail lamp, with a 4-pin trailer light harness coming out of it. The black wire spliced into the red wire at the left goes into the box in the middle, and the four small wires...- DintDobbs

Hello from NC
@Fix4Dirt Yeah, I had forgotten about that matter on the 1st gens... and since he didn't say he's looking for a rear end, we can sort of assume he's already got that together. And I meant just the gears, not the whole diff, but if he needs the reverse cut, then mine will do no good! My...- DintDobbs

@Matteo93x Nice find! Welcome to our collective backyard, this place has saved most of our necks at least once. Quite a difference the wheels and tires make, eh? I'm not hacking this pretty girl up under any circumstance, so making sure things will clear is paramount! :P I'm definitely leaning toward the 265/70 rather than straight 31x10 or 31x10.50; what I've got fits great, and that very small difference won't affect the clearance much, on 1" spacers...- DintDobbs

Incidentally, the tires on this now are 255/70R16, which roughly equals 30x10. A 275/70R16 would go up to roughly 31x11, so width might be an issue with spacers, on the outside. Might go with 30.5-ish rather than 31, even after the lift, because I know from experience that there's not as much...- DintDobbs

Blown motor?? Let's just swap it out for a v8
@Ruben9237 PATS is short for Passive Anti-Theft System. @Fix4Dirt stated this somewhere on Page 2, but then it got buried by all the off-topic stuff (one of my threads got steered off topic... that's what Converstations are for, people). @Ruben9237 Shoot, kid! @Fix4Dirt Yep, always one of the first things I check on any vehicle I buy! @Fix4Dirt Thanks, but I have no need! I kept the premium from the Vulture when I swapped in the Pioneer. @JamesWoolery Welp! On to Plan B, once you get that scanner (or get to a parts store) and pull the codes, let us know what they are, and we'll move forward from there! At least you solved the big problems; the little ones are next!- DintDobbs

@JamesWoolery I'd listen to Fix4Dirt; this isn't the first time I've heard FORScan recommended. The OxGord has two advantages; first, it is very small, and second, it is self-contained. The FORScan is a much, much more sophisticated piece, but requires an external device. Read all about it...- DintDobbs

Here it is, folks! The great void spanning between the hitch receiver and the crossmember! I don't run with the D-ring in. Reduces clearance, and people steal 'em. I put it in exactly when I'm going to use it, and put it away exactly when I'm done.- DintDobbs

Welp, finally got my hitch receiver on to day. As you can see, it does hang a bit lower than the fog lights, but not by much. @joney As I always say, some more info would be nice. Just the windows not working doesn't tell us anything about the starter, even if it isn't a bad switch. @Chris1973 Any updates? I know life happens, but I'm a bit curious as to what exactly the "thing" is. Is it stock? Aftermarket? Maybe leftovers from somebody else's hack job? Pics will help us to know. Also, if it's got a part number on it, that might help too.- DintDobbs

@JamesWoolery You've found a piece of gold among the rocks, only 60k miles? That's a time traveler! @mblakel21 You could also do a little photo editing to show the pro exactly what you want, and/or buy some poster board and Plasti-Dip (more throw-and-go than spray paint), cut out the exact shape to cover the pillar exactly how you want it, and then mock it up (AFTER it dries!) and show a pic...- DintDobbs

Going to tint the windows. Should I wrap the top in black as well?
@mblakel21 Fortunately for you, your generation of Explorer has a nice little ridge where the C-pillar meets the body side. @mblakel21 What if you just wrapped the C-pillar, for a "floating" roof like Range Rover tends to like? Might turn some heads, if that's all you're trying to do. If you don't have a limited budget and you like the look, go for the black. It would also protect the paint from rain, sun, and avian...- DintDobbs
