2000 limited 5.0 wouldn't start after new exhaust installed. It started but here's my new problem.

@Stickman1966 Man, that is one nasty trail of blood, sweat, and tears! I hope this next move serves you well and you get to enjoy the benefits of all of this hard work.

    Sup everybody

@Drewskeeno Welcome to EF! You've come to the right place. If information about your Explorer is to be had, this is the place you'll find it.

2000 limited 5.0 wouldn't start after new exhaust installed. It started but here's my new problem.

@Stickman1966 Patience is a virtue! This is good progress, tracing wiring problems is annoying!

If it ain't broke... it probably will be soon

@RigandGrif I'd kind of be inclined to encourage that idea right there, just replace every thing and don't have to worry about going back six months later to fix the next weak link. Probably save a bit on shipping ordering things together, too.

    Project Vulture

@410Fortune Exactly, but I can't be sure that was absolutely the problem, as firstly, the fuel pump wires were all covered in rubber, and secondarily, I couldn't see the driver's side of the gasket to know for sure whether the wires were trapped or not. All I saw (and heard) was sparks near the...

    Project Vulture

@410Fortune I can't be absolutely sure that this was the issue, but based on some thing I observed while putting the fuel pump back in after dropping the tank the second time, I am inclined to believe that one of the fuel pump wires was trapped between the "lid" and the gasket, and might have...

    Hello All

Welcome to this vast place of knowledge and wisdom. You'll no doubt find this place an invaluable resource as long as you own your Explorer!

I change the oil once a year (some times don't even put 2500 miles on her in a year) for good measure, at registration renewal time. Synthetic deteriorates sort of quickly. I absolutely love the torque control on the SOHC + 5R55E setup. I drove a 302 + 4R70W once and really didn't care for...

@allmyEXes DemonMudder speaks the truth, it is indeed the SOHC. No timing chain rattle yet, at 197k!

    Uwharrie 2025

Mega bump. This year is already nearly a third of the way over, and my Explorer has just received some much-needed maintenance and overhauls. I'm thinking this trip is best done in August or September; the daylight hours will be more favorable in August, but temperatures more tolerable in...

    Project Vulture

After spending most of the day toying around with my beloved Explorer, I managed to get the intake manifold gaskets changed and the new injectors installed, had the oil changed, passed state inspection, and renewed the registration. It's been a busy day, but the Vulture lives on, and that makes...

    4.0L 4x4 Tranny Swap

As far as I know, the only difference between a '97 and a '98 5R55E is the location of the vehicle speed sensor; I think '98 is the year the sensor was relocated from the rear end of the transmission to the top of the differential housing.

@Olddude79 Welcome to our collective parts pile! This forum is the right place to be. 2nd gen is a solid platform. Which engine? 4x4? How many miles on her? We want pics!

And ran it around town a bit. Stalled twice, once on shifting from Drive to Neutral, and again when idling immediately after the first stall (never shifted out of Neutral). Tried every thing I could think of to replicate the conditions that blew the fuse the other day, and again to day, and...

Heater Control Valve Delete, Yes or No?

I don't have any thing to contribute to this conversation other than what has already been said, but +1 to both 410Fortune and J_C. Also, what you said, if it took 30 years to kill it once, it's going to take another 30 years to kill it again. I'd say replace it and roll with it.

    Project Vulture

Got back out at it today, found 20A mini fuse #9 (fuel pump) in the distribution box blown. Whee, replaced it and it blew again after idling for a few minutes. Fortunately for me, I was underneath the vehicle when it happened this time, and observed a few things. Firstly, the new DENSO fuel...

    Project Vulture

@410Fortune I would have thought so, but getting around the block successfully before having the issue doesn't add up there. But I did have time to drop the tank again after work to day and look at the connections, they're all clean and dry and tight. With the tank partially lowered and every...

    Blowing fuse

@J_C I have nothing to do with this conversation, but that reply was absolutely the most comprehensive method for troubleshooting that could be described. I approve and endorse that process.

    Project Vulture

@donalds I had the fuel filter changed very recently (last year) and didn't figure it was a necessary measure at this time, given that the inside of the fuel tank was extremely clean, but I am aware that these components are ideally replaced together. This morning, before work, I went out to it...

    Project Vulture

Dropped the fuel tank, replaced the fuel pump with the new DENSO unit, and took a drive around the block to make sure that every thing is working as it should be. It started and ran flawlessly, easy driving and hard driving. However, when shifting into reverse gear to back into my usual...

    Project Vulture

Update: Drove the Vulture to work to day. Started like a champ with the new EGR charcoal canisters, vent valve, and purge valve installed (and actually connected the way they should be). Didn't hint at stalling at any time. Looks like she'll be in good order for upcoming trips. Now, to wait...

    Project Vulture

Thank God for longer daylight hours. I found time after work to install the new charcoal canisters, vent valve, and purge valve, as well as craft this nifty little shield to protect the new purge valve (and all the connections on it) from all such as is kicked up by tires. Ignore the uncanny...

What socket sizes for a 2nd gen?

@toobladink Not to be "that" guy, but I strongly advise against sourcing tools from Harbor Freight. Much more a fan of companies that know their products are worth the costs associated with quality craftsmanship. I destroyed multiple pieces from a cheap set of tools sourced from Harbor Freight...

1992 explorer gets a solid axle and v8 5 speed

Random suggestion for fender flares, have you considered using flares from a full-size pickup? Like a F-150 or RAM? There are some pretty radically wide options available for both from, say, 2015-2020-ish, and some of those options are sure to be large enough to clear a 37. You'll pay more...

    Project Vulture

Welp... all of the money has been spent. Now, to play the parts waiting game. RockAuto said the charcoal canisters shipped immediately and were supposed to arrive Wednesday 04/02, but USPS tracker says they arrived on time at their first stop and should deliver 04/04. Curious how RockAuto...

Do you guys think I am nuts?

I'm with Jamie (410Fortune)... Don't take apart one working truck to make an other one, run the $2900 until you get the transfer case for your original, and then keep both. 2nd gen Explorers are good vehicles. I have multiple, every one should.

    Project Vulture

Took the mystery box to a nearby Ford dealer and requested a parts diagram of the charcoal canister and every thing that's connected to it, and the open port is exactly that... just an open port. The canister vent valve vents the vapors into this box, and the open port vents the vapors into the...

1999 Ford Explorer V8 5.0 liter rear end.

@JFlynnMurphy This thread was started and ended 14 years ago. In disregard to that, however, there is one last detail to consider when changing axles/gear ratios, and that is the speedometer reading. The vehicle speed sensor must be adjusted to accommodate any changes in gear ratio, or it will...

    Gauge Cluster works intermittent

@malikaimiller08 If you take the gauge cluster out, you can see where all the light bulbs plug into the back. It might be a good idea to change all the bulbs while you're in there, and clean up the wires a bit. The wires are very thin and if the bulbs are not seated securely they won't make...

    Project Vulture

Found a bit of time to day to take the entire assembly down, including the mystery box. When I took the hose off the "To Canister" fitting, a bunch of reddish brown particles dumped out of the opening. Nothing dumped out of the end which had nothing connected. I didn't get pics of the...

    95 ford explorer fender

What toypaseo said. Also, be advised that there are at least 3 different styles of fender flares from different years and trim lines, if fender flares are present. The good news there is that both styles of "wide" fender flares are secured with the same type of hardware.

    Project Vulture

Having finally found the time to play with things, I took a multimeter to the EGR solenoid (directed by the P0443) and tested both the vehicle wiring and the solenoid itself. On the vehicle side of things, I had 14 volts on Fuse 13 at the fuse/relay box under the hood, and 14 volts at the...

@DemonMudder If I'm not mistaken Denso is the OEM for Toyota's fuel pumps. That fact alone gives me good feelings. So, (edited) parts list time: Intake manifold gaskets, upper and lower: Fel-Pro MS90890 kit Lower intake manifold: Dorman 615-176 (if available, no luck so far) Fuel Pump: Denso...
