New excitement turned nightmare...
There are a bunch of SOHC swaps going on using newer mustang 4.0 sohc motors. This is way less expensive than the tensioner fix, and is a permanent fix as the new mustang motors are a redesign without the tensioner issues.- Dono

To cam or not to cam? 4.0 OHV
Ok, opening up again with my own pain. P0303 codes, traced to compression of 90 in Cyl 3. I checked vacuum, and its a steady 19. No coolant loss. Im guessing I have a exhaust valve not closing all the way, or burnt valve. Sure hope its head. Even gasket is ok, as its coming apart...- Dono

Troubleshooting P0303 on 4.0 OHV
Ok, New gaskets and head on the way. Clearwater Cylinder heads is excellent to deal with. They are sending me another head with a pre-paid return label. I just want to make sure I have covered all bases when I get my motor apart. I dont want to get stuck needing another part. Now, as long...- Dono

whine coming from engine - uh oh
Which motor? v8? Lots of posts on the cam sync sensor. Do you have a stethescope? They are cheap, and with the motor running, you can poke around under the hood till you set the probe on the offending part. The noise will get very loud when you do. It could be as simple as your...- Dono

98 Exp 4.0 OHV Coolant Loss/leak, Misfire, Cylinder Head Advice
Well, we both seem to be in pretty much the same boat. My #3 cylinder compression is quite low also (80 to a max of 120). I'm going to see about having someone with a leak down tester see if they can give me more info. Your compression numbers are way higher than mine, interestingly enough...- Dono

98 Exp 4.0 OHV Coolant Loss/leak, Misfire, Cylinder Head Advice
Bank 3 seems to be where it all happens. At the back lower intake usually blows out. The factory cylinder heads are weak on Cyl 3 on one bank(Back of motor) and Cyl 4 on the other bank. Its interesting that my #3 is whats misfiring also. It seems that some of these issues are almost...- Dono

98 Exp 4.0 OHV Coolant Loss/leak, Misfire, Cylinder Head Advice
Ya, your pulling some coolant in to your motor, either thru your head gasket, or a hairline crack in a head. Maybe lower intake gasket again? But which is it? Whick bank?? Im still no further ahead on my misfire issue either. No spark plug issues?- Dono

Troubleshooting P0303 on 4.0 OHV
Ok, so the dead sensor was the DPFE. It just so happened that the exhaust gas line came off (The nipple was pretty short from a previous hose going bad) and burnt a hole thru it. The mechanic looking at it has ran out of time for now. In a week or so, he is going to set it up on the scope...- Dono

Troubleshooting P0303 on 4.0 OHV
So, I took my exploder in to a licensed mechanic. He's a friend of a friend, and is doing the work on the side, He has been struggling with it. This morning he called me and says I have a dead sensor, and is picking one up. The sensor is about $100.00. I sure hope it fixes the issue...- Dono

97 4.0 OHV No-Start. Tried everything. Any advice????
Sorry I didn't strike a cord anywhere in my post. Do you have any idea what colour wire would be a pulse wire to the coil off the pcm? I'm GUESSING that there is no pulse right at the PCM either. That would mean that something is either not telling the pcm its supposed to sent spark pulse...- Dono

97 4.0 OHV No-Start. Tried everything. Any advice????
At the coil, can you find a wire that is the input pulse the coil of a certain cylinder and see if you can see that pulse? Im not even sure what you could use. A volt meter probably isn't fast enough. Here's a link http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_do_you_check_ignition_coil_operation You...- Dono

New crisis.....ABS light on
Yup, without having the codes read at this point you are going to be guessing with some expensive parts. Odds are, the issue is one of the wheel bearings (abs sensors in the front are part of the wheel bearing). Which one? Get the code read and you won't be guessing.- Dono

Engine swap 98 sohc
I feel like this is a hyjack, sorry. BigPip, what was involved in changing from the OHV to SOHC? I love the idea of a 2005 mustang motor. I would think there would be serious electronic mods to do though. I see you have done this. Can you clarify? Do you have a build thread somewhere I...- Dono

Engine swap 98 sohc
So, reading this, why would anyone bother pulling their older Overhead Cam motor to do the tensioners when you can just drop in a frech motor? clunking out of front end when brakes applied lightly
ok, Fixed. I just wanted to update. I took it in to well known shop. The mechanic felt that once the brake rotor warmed up the passenger inner brake pad was shifting, clattering and banging. Fix? Resurface rotors, new anti-squeal metal, and disk brake quiet. He said even though there...- Dono

Troubleshooting P0303 on 4.0 OHV
It becomes tough to know what the issue is. I don't seem to be seeing te 0304 anymore. No more codes at all. It does sound like we both have exactly the same issue. The fuel in the old filter was murky. I do need to check fuel pressure and vac pressure. It looks like a fuel pressur guage...- Dono

Troubleshooting P0303 on 4.0 OHV
Maybe I'll see if I can match wire colours on the injector against a wire on the pcm and check for continuity. ok, so I think the P0301 was me pulling plug wires, confirming my issue. Now, I just changed all injectors and guess what? P0303. Im thinking a lot of not very nice words here. Is it possible that fuel preasure could cause just 1 cylinder to read misfires at low idle? I have a very bad...- Dono

clunking out of front end when brakes applied lightly
I was wrong, the clunks back. It sure sounds like a drive shaft, or cv joint. When I apply the brakes lightly at slow speeds, its a rythmic ca clunk, ca clunk, ca clunk...... I think I might pull the front drive shaft tonight. I have a feeling it could easily be a cv joint. I'll have to...- Dono
