Another voltage drop problem - Need an electical guru

If your vehicle was new, you'd have a point. But alternators wear, connections corrode increasing resistance, idles drop lower as engines age, etc. It 's all enough to make what was a (barely) adequate new charging system not keep up. Sorry. The fact that it drops from alternator contributing...

Another voltage drop problem - Need an electical guru

I think you have merely exceeded the output of your alternator at idle. You can either: Not idle for too long with heavy loads, or Change to a higher output alternator (although you will need to look at the specs to see if a high-output alternator puts out any more at your idle speed) or, Not...

    Help with rear shocks

This is one of those strange times when "better" things are actually worse. A grade 8 bolt has a higher tensile strength which offers a higher clamping force; but they are also more brittle, offering much less strength in shear (such as when you're using it for a stud). Grade 5 is a better...

Long road trip - advice welcome.

I'd really recommend getting a copy of The Milepost before you go. It has every mile of the Alcan laid out along with every phone and hours of every business along the road. I've driven the Alcan maybe 8 or 9 times now; it's a great trip in early September. The colors in the Yukon will blow...

    Fuel Gauge problems....

The float on your sending unit is bad (has a hole in it). You can replace just the unit, or replace the pump and sending unit as an assembly. I replaced just the sender, but I only saved about three bucks. Check RockAuto. Cheers! John

    CEL - Code 172

The solution I re-examined the removed passenger side O2 sensor, and saw that the wires had been crimped at some point (probably when the clutch was replaced by the previous owner). Apparently while crimped it shorted out the corresponding circuit in the computer; replacing the O2 sensor didn't...

    keyless entry problems

I have a 1993 Explorer Sport - I don't believe keyless entry was available on the Sport. It was first available on the Limited in either 1993 or 1994, and then on the regular models with the Gen 2. At least that's the story I've been told... Cheers! John

the more i fix the worse it gets

I'm guessing the reason they don't have the CEL is that are both driving Canadian vehicles. CEL's started as a way to report emissions problems and weren't required in Canada at the time. No manufacturer would put a light to let you know your car was malfunctioning until it was required...

    CEL - Code 172

Well, it passed the balance test, but now it idles too high; I get a 411 along with my 172. I guess I didn't hook up a vac line or something when I took off the throttle body the last time... Back to the drawing board. Cheers! John

    CEL - Code 172

While I was putting it back together to do the cylinder balance test, I read your post and figured checking out the other plugs was a good thing. After I discovered that removing the upper radiator hose makes getting at plugs much easier, and that the only way I can get the rear boot off is...

    CEL - Code 172

Ok, I think I have a brainstorm (or more likely, a brain dribble): While looking at the upper intake, it occurred to me that as ugly as it looks inside, it and everything connected to it (EGR, IAC, etc.) would affect both banks, not just one of them. So I started thinking, what would...

    CEL - Code 172

The wiring to the O2 sensor is free and not pinched. I also checked the entire perimeter of the bellhousing/block junction and nothing is trapped between them. The pump puts out 38-40 psi whenever active with no vacuum to the regulator (either KOEO or running with vac disconnected/plugged)...

    CEL - Code 172

OK, I replaced the right O2 sensor with a new Bosch one, cleared the codes, and took it out for a ride... Still CEL 172. It doesn't matter if the engine is cold or hot when you start it, every time you drive about two minutes the CEL comes on. If you turn it off even for just a couple...

    CEL - Code 172

I've visually checked the exhaust system looking for leaks; it looks pretty good (although even with a lift you can't see the passenger manifold very well.) I pulled the middle cylinder spark plug on the passenger side and it looks great, with nice tannish-white deposits on the tip. The O2...

    CEL - Code 172

No, the 172 is in the continuous memory, and also in the Key On Engine Running test. When you drive the car, there is no CEL for the first couple minutes, then it comes on and stays on until you shut off the car. Cheers! John

    CEL - Code 172

OK, I've checked the fuel pressure. With the key on, it reads 38-40 psi. After engine starts, it drops to 30 and stays exactly there, whether you rev the engine or not. When it cools off, I'll check plugs and the O2 wiring. A little background: I just got the car. I changed the...

    CEL - Code 172

Hello All! My 1993 Sport is giving a code 172 in continuous and KOER - a 111 in KOEO. After reading the threads in search, I have: Cleaned the MAF (really dirty) Cleaned the throttle body (i know the decal says not to, but the bottom tube was so filthy it wouldn't pass air) Cleaned the...

    Fuel gauge wont move

I replaced just the sender and kept the old pump. At the time, the sender alone was $60 and the pump assy started at around $100. It wasn't hard to do, and now that I've done it once, I could do it again in hour or so. Just in case Mr. Murphy does make a house call... Cheers! John

    Fuel gauge wont move

FG42A was around $60, IIRC. Sunk float/sending unit = same thing, unless you know of a source for replacement floats. I couldn't find one, but that doesn't mean there aren't any. I am also an odo tripper. But I also use my fuel gauge. Two sources of info are better than one... Cheers! John

    Fuel gauge wont move

If the gauge stays on empty, the problem is the sending unit. I just did this two days ago. I bought a FG42A from Rock Auto, pulled the tank, swapped the in-tank pump to the new sending unit, and put it back together. Works perfect. If you search, you'll find other threads about replacing the...

    93 explorer seats?

Can you tell what the difference is between 2001 and 2002 seats? There are great sets of 2002 seats around, but not 2001 and earlier. Be gentle, I'm a virgin. ;{> Cheers! John
