    first time offroad advice

OK, you could be right about the "starting in 2nd gear" I went out and drove it this morning and it sure seems like it shifts from 1st to 2nd when it is in "2" but maybe that is just the torque conv. locking in??? I don't know but I had an rpm drove when it feels like it is shifting into...

new rocker panels where to get them

Here are a couple companies that sell replaccement rocker panels http://www.autokrafters.com http://www.raybuck.com http://www.bumperauto.com/ Hopefully this is helpful...

    first time offroad advice

I am not ASE certified or anything, but when you are in "2" I don't think you "start out in 2nd gear"... I am almost 100% sure that you are just limited to 1st and 2nd gears. You still start out in 1st gear though. Just "Drive" locks you into 3rd and then "OD" is your last step.

    Vacuum Check

well... I did not realize WD-40 was "extremely flammable". I guess I don't spend a lot of time trying to ignite lubricants..... Go figure

    Vacuum Check

More than likely WD-40 since it is not flamable like starting fluid. If there is a vacuum leak then the WD will bubble. You could probably use REALLY soapy water as well.

    spark plug gap

If you are going to the parts store and telling them what you need, the gap on those plugs are usually pretty close. If you want to check your coil pack turn on your Expl. and 1 by 1 pull off the plug wire at the coil pack and check for spark. The spark will jump if the wire is within an...

    problem with heads

I know at least the top 3 bolts on the exhaust have to come out! I would do the Liquid Wrench thing and avoid driving it while you are doing that. The heating and cooling action really kills trying to loosen the bolts. I would definately not use an impact wrench, too much torque! When I...

    New engine for my explorer

From doing engine swaps before, I would recommend boring out the 4.0L, doing an oversized cam or performance cam, and alternate the intake manifold. These things would be MUCH cheaper than doing the conversion to the 5..0L. Dave is right about the 2K in parts for adaptation... And Explorers...

    4wd not working

That is the exact website I was thinking of... just could figure out where I had seen it!! Some of the guys at Ford will flatout tell you that the auto hubs are worth only about 50,000 miles after that you need new ones. Preferably the manual Warns...that is my suggestion. Lift and tires are...

    4wd not working

First, search for other posts on transfer case problems. Second, if your truck is similar to mine you probably have the electronic shift acuator, not the vacuum actuator. That shift motor needs taken off and the terminals need the black "crud" lightly sanded off. The first set of terminals...

    Blowing hot air

My 91 does the same thing!! It really "P's" me off!!! I was told at one time that the cable in the dash needed adjusted to get the temp lever to work correctly. I don't know if that is true or not but it sure sounded good at the time... It might be something to check out?!

    anti theft system

Search for that topic, I am pretty sure I have seen a couple posts about that. I do know that it is a pain in the a$$!

    repacking bearings

From what I have found, the best tiem is while you have the brakes off. I have the hub assembly to deal with on my truck but at any rate if you are repalcing brakes then repack the bearings if they are in need of grease. This past brake job, I put new rotors on and just decided to put new...

    Problem with brakes

The only differnce in the size of the brake rotor comes from the gear ratio in your axle(s). The "brakes" only rattle when you are braking?? That seems a bit odd... Maybe if you gave more detail, I could help more.

How often do you change the RA bushings?

I put bushings on my 91 about 60,000 miles ago and they are still there but getting ready to be replaced. I used the poly bushings. I would recomend buying the porcelin insulation caps from Ford. Like Browning said, the passenger side is always going to be the side that goes first becasue of...

    Breaking in a new engine

Well... From breaking in 3 different 4.0L engines on my own truck, I recommend that you run the engine at moderate speeds and rpms. Some engines you could easily just run the piss out of them right off the start, but I would not do this with the 4.0L. The biggest issue with this engine is...

Synthetic pours out of my truck like a siv

Synthetic oil seems to work well on import engines like Honda engines and the like. Those types of engines has smaller clearances for all the internally lubricated parts. Ford engines, especially with high miles will almost garantee to leak beak the seal break down, loosen up and the...

question about cleaning contacts in transfer case

Yes, the black build up is what needs cleaned off. I just did mine about a week ago. Once I got the motor back together everything work great. We will see how long that lasts... The plastic wheel that has a groove in it has to be in the exact same position that it was when you took the motor...

    Hubs or transfer case problem?

Yes, I do believe that if your front drive shaft is turning that means your transfer case is engaged. And if that is the case then, yes it would cause lower gas mileage. The only thing I have really heard about the transfer case not locking or unlocking is a failure in the electric motor. I...

    rotten eggs under my hood?

Yeah, the cat. convertor is a good option. Apparently if the inside of the convertor breaks out, the beads in the convertor will start to melt and smell like sulfur. If you take it to any muffler shop were the guys actually know what htey are doing, they should be able to tell you if it is...

    Hubs or transfer case problem?

My truck has the same problem with the hubs not wanting to unlock when they are supposed to. The only difference is my truck has about 230,000 miles on the auto hubs and they REALLY need replaced. I have talked to a friend at Ford and he said that one problem I am having is the U Bolts on the...

Extended Warranty-What can I expect to break?

One major thing you want to watch on after market warranties is the fact that some will no cover gaskets and seals. I know on the 4.0Ls in the 91-92's gaskets were a major problem. I have heard that 1sourceautowarranty sucks **** Everyone knows that the transmissions on EXplorers are not very...

    P/S Gearbox Help Needed

gearbox replacement As mrboyle said, replacing the gearbox takes no special talents. There are only like 3 bolts holding the box on the frame, the bolt for the steering column, and the pitman arm connection. It is relatively easy. I bought my new box at Autozone because I was in the same...

    Dunlop Radial Rover RV

Radial Rovers The Radial Rovers will treat you well. I have had them on my 91 for about a year and a half. They have been very good tires. I pull a landscaping trailer with those tires and have never had ant problem what so ever. Sounds like you got a good deal from Sears!! I would...
