Aerodynamic Fuel Saver or Mileage Killer?

It's supposed to keep your rear window clean, and it does add drag.

    Aerostar manual transmission installation.

Another question: Did you use a crank spacer between the crank and flywheel? There is a spacer for the flex plate.

    Aerostar manual transmission installation.

Thanks Josh, I misunderstood and thought you used the Mustang cylinders on both ends. This makes more sense, although I didn't realize the Mustang slave would fit on the M5's mounting boss.

    Aerostar manual transmission installation.

The transmission is still there, but the plastic "hard" line was kind of trashed. I looked at the 2005 Mustang MC, and it does not look like it will easily fit an Aerostar without an adapter bracket of some sort. What is that connector on the MC called?

    Aerostar manual transmission installation.

I got lucky a couple weeks ago when an Aerostar with manual transmission showed up in a salvage yard sort of near me. I got its clutch and brake pedal assembly, so I can minimize the fabrication I need to do. The stud on the pedal that the MC pushrod connects to is a little worn out, and I may...

    M5OD plumbing.

I hope Josh P sees this as he suggested that I start my own thread. I'm about to install a M5OD-R1 into my Aerostar to replace the original A4LD, which died recently. I got the master cylinder for the Aerostar and not sure what kind of fitting it needs. Josh (and someone else) mentioned that...

    Aerostar manual transmission installation.

Thanks Josh, I must not have been looking at the right sources for transmissions. How did you find these? I'll call them tomorrow to see if they also have the clutch pedals. It would be great if I didn't have to fab that. I am told that the master cylinder from a Ranger will work, but MC for...

    Aerostar manual transmission installation.

Hi Josh, I have a 4.0l v6 in a XLT with E4WD. The A4LD recently died, and I wanted to avoid that issue altogether, so I found a M5OD-R1HD out of a Ranger. But the top cover/shifter assembly puts the shift lever near the back of the transmission's main case, which puts it too far back in the...

    Aerostar manual transmission installation.

First of all, amazing work! Very functional upgrade with professional looking result. I hope you're still watching this thread, as I want to do the same thing with my 1990 Aerostar, and have some questions. The first is, what is the part number for that Aero-specific top cover/shifter...

    Brighter headlights on Gen-1 explorer

You might first try to clean up the lenses with something like this: http://www.harborfreight.com/lens-renewal-kit-67723.html This is a temporary solution, as they will haze up again from sun exposure. If you want replacements, a quick search on the net brought up some choices...

    Brighter headlights on Gen-1 explorer

I hear you Mr. Cribb. I've installed relays with heavy gauge wires for the headlights of all my cars, to avoid the overheating of the wires and switches, and to provide brighter lighting. What a lot of people don't realize is that in addition to the headlight switch, the multifunction...

    Brighter headlights on Gen-1 explorer

Sorry folks, I don't spend a lot of time here. Yes, oils from your fingers can cause the glass envelop of most bulbs to crack at the temperatures they usually run at. So don't touch the bulbs themselves, but if you do, wipe them off with a degreaser that doesn't leave any residue. Another...

Half shaft seal replacement on an E-4WD Aerostar.

They're actually dimpled, so they don't have the weakness of cross-drilled. They're made by BrakePerformance.com in Chatsworth, CA. One of my friends drives a Chevrolet Astro, and installed a set of these, and really liked them. So I got the same model as my existing discs were starting to...

Half shaft seal replacement on an E-4WD Aerostar.

Definitely pictures, but it was kind of difficult to do when I was up to my elbows in grease. I changed out the CV joint boot this afternoon, and there are some mixed results. Pictures starting with the completed brake assembly from last weekend, which I had to disassemble to start...

Half shaft seal replacement on an E-4WD Aerostar.

Thanks! I'll be getting to it this weekend, and I'll report back.

Half shaft seal replacement on an E-4WD Aerostar.

Hello Brooklyn, I usually cruise the ford-trucks forum, and as looking for tips on removing the CV joint, which led me here. Can you verify that all I have to do is unbolt the inner half-shaft flange from the differential flange, remove the spindle nut from the outer end end of the spindle...

    Brighter headlights on Gen-1 explorer

Dragging up an old thread... Putting resistors in series with the light sort of defeats the purpose of the relays. The point of the relay is to bypass the stock (Christmas tree light) wiring, which has so much resistance that the headlights usually operate at well under specified power...

    Intake gaskets upper/lower/valve covers w/egr

When I replaced my intake manifold gaskets, I did not separate the fuel rail form the lower intake, so I did not deal with that gasket, or the injector O-rings. Since I did not disturb them, I think they're OK. It's been 3 years, and both vans I did this to are still running fine.

    Intake gaskets upper/lower/valve covers w/egr

A lot of those connectors have TWO locking tabs, so you need 2 of those tools to unlatch them without breaking them off. Sounds like you've gotten along pretty far, but I have some pictures I took when I did mine: http://picasaweb.google.com/eycchu/Aerostar#5420583060524731698 My van is...

    Transfer case differences?

Thanks DoOver, Yes, the unlocked mode of the Aerostar transfer case sends 30% of the torque to the front and 70% to the rear. This is from the gearing of its differential; it's almost like a gear type limited slip differential (like Torsen or Quaif), but with a much gentler slope on the...

    Transfer case differences?

Thanks BrooklynB. I have found the answer to my question from a tech at a place called Rockland Standard Gear, which sells transfer cases. Basically, all moving parts wear together, and it's generally not enough to replace just a single worn part, such as the Morse chain. The Aerostar TC has...

    Transfer case differences?

Howdy All, New member here. Been reading some great posts for a while, but now I have a question I hope someone can help me with. I have a 1990 Aerostar with the e4wd drive train, and it's had this clunking noise for a while, and it's gotten worse recently. It only happens when I start...
