New relay circuit for ham radio

Thanks JC. I think I was hoping to find out that these trucks had been built with this sort of thing in mind that I could just plug into. Unfortunately, all my cig. lighter ports are unswitched. I think I can tap into the line going to my stereo. I appreciate the response. Thanks Jason

New relay circuit for ham radio

Hi, I wired a ham radio to my truck a couple years ago. It's wired directly to the battery, so it's always on unless I turn it off. I would like to have it come on when my truck comes on though. What's the best way to add a new relay to do this? I'm figuring to use the existing wiring from...

    Applique re-install

Thanks Rob. I think I'll order it. I'll report back once I've completed it and close out the thread appropriately.

    Applique re-install

Thanks Rob, I hadn't thought about how I was going to reattach it, I just knew I didn't want to use something as rigid as what was on there. I spent a few minutes with a plastic putty knife, that was clearly going to take forever. I'll try the chisel. Is this the tape that would work for...

    Applique re-install

Hi everyone and happy new year, My applique fell off in the carwash the other day. Fortunately it's still in one piece, and not a scratch on it. I don't think it's the original applique as there's a bunch of epoxy and double sided tape stuck to the back of my truck. I'm figuring I'll...

    Penetrating Firewall

Thanks for the reply. I ended up drilling a hole. I put it between the two studs that support the foam foot rest for the drivers left foot. Notched the foam for the wires, used a rubber pcv valve and siliconed it up. Wires are a bit exposed underneath, so need something to cover them with...

    Penetrating Firewall

Truck is 2004 Explorer EB V8. For Christmas this year, my wife got me a nice mobile ham rig. (For those interested, it's an Icom ID-880h). I'm super excited about getting this thing installed, however, I can't figure out how to get power from the battery into the cab. I've read a few posts...

    2004 Acceleration lag

The '04 4.6 I picked up a couple weeks ago does the exact same thing as the OP's. I haven't had time to look at it yet, but it was recommended I take it to the dealer for a throttle body cleaning. Apparently there's a TSB for this issue.

Just picked up an '04 Exp Eddie Bauer

Thanks for the info, you guys are a serious wealth of knowledge. I'll post back after I get the fluids changed with anything that comes up. Thanks again.

Just picked up an '04 Exp Eddie Bauer

Thanks for the great advice. I've used Seafoam on all my vehicles, love the stuff. I used to pour some into the throttle body as well. Spits out lots of smoke, but supposed to clean out the top end. Any particular reason it's recommended not to flush the tranny when replacing the fluid...

Just picked up an '04 Exp Eddie Bauer

This truck has 135,000 miles on it, and appears to be in excellent condition. Of course, time will tell if there's anything hidden, but so far so good. Is there anything specific I should examine on it? Common issues with this model that might not be obvious? There's couple things I've...

Firestone Destination A/T - Anyone use these?

Thanks for all the info, this site is a great source of answers, especially for those of us only moderately mechanically inclined. I'd like to add that I'm thinking of slightly larger tires (30x9.5). I understand this will raise the truck only about 1/2", but I'm hoping to get a bit of a...

Firestone Destination A/T - Anyone use these?

Thanks for the responses. Unfortunately, 2 sets of tires is out of the question right now. I'm not looking to climb rocks or do any serious off-roading, I just don't want to be completely unprepared for an opportunity to leave the pavement.

Firestone Destination A/T - Anyone use these?

I'm looking at the Firestone Destination A/T (30x9.5) for my 1994 Sport. Has anyone used these? My concerns are ride quality on highway & handling on icy roads. As far as offroad,, I don't do it much, but if an occasion arises, I'd like to be ready to say yes. Thanks

    engine smoke

If you determine that it is leaking from the valve covers (It doesn't appear we're certain of that yet), you might check for blowby. If your rings are worn (or you have a damaged piston) this could increase the crankcase pressure enough to force more oil out through the valve cover gaskets.

    Odd behavior with my brakes

Yeah, I didn't consider this to be normal behavior. Still, if you're leaking brake fluid, get that fixed.

    Odd behavior with my brakes

I agree with Anime. If the rear brakes don't engage in 2-wheel drive, they won't engage in 4-wheel drive. They only appear to because the rear wheels are connected to the front. Even with open differentials, if both front wheels lock while in 4-wheel drive, then the rear drive shaft won't be...

    Odd Vibration

The shackle is definitely rusted, though it doesn't appear compromised, it's not just paint flaking. Layered thick pieces of rust. I'll work it next weekend and check the others. I'm not seeing any evidence of movement, I doubt it's the source of the vibration. The vibration is speed...

    loping and high idle

I like the idea of checking for vacuum leaks too, but my own recent experience with these symptoms ended up resolved once I replaced the dpfe sensor. I was getting a code that pointed the way. Something to keep in mind while you're scratching your head.

    Odd Vibration

OK, rotated tires this morning. Checked bearings - No play Checked Drive Shaft - Clean, though I doubt I could tell if a balance weight was missing or installed improperly. U-Joints looked clean and dry, do they need to be removed to be inspected? I'm seeing no rust around them at all. Drive...

    Odd Vibration

I'll get up early and rotate tires. Hubs are manual, I'll check them while they're off and report back. Thanks for the tips.

    Odd Vibration

Anime, Thanks for the reply. I don't think it's front-end/wheels related. I'm not feeling it in the steering wheel at all and it sounds/feels drive-line related. Is there a way to troubleshoot this w/out throwing parts at it? Thanks

    Odd Vibration

I'm getting an odd vibration. The faster I'm going the more noticeable it is. It's detectable at about 45 mph. It seems to happen when there's no stress between the transmission and engine, such as when I press the clutch. It also happens when I'm traveling down the highway with just...

    manual transmission problems

Sounds to me as though there are 2 gears engaged at the same time. This would cuase the tranny to bind on itself, and would also explain the grinding you heard as the problem happened. Perhaps one of the "collar" gears (not sure the proper name) on one of the shafts is stuck.

    Hose on rear axle

Thanks, figured it was something simple.
