    Finally killed my A4LD haha

My A4LD is probably going to go bye-bye soon too. CLANKS every time it goes into neutral. I drive 17 miles to work and back each day at about 65-70 MPH, so I just hope that when it goes, it's at a lower speed...:)

    Oil Pump Removal

Thanks for the post, curlej. I have a similar problem with my 91. The pressure guage fluctuates from high-normal to 0. Mechanic told me he thinks it's just a malfunction in the guage itself. I don't have ANY other symptoms of low pressure. No blue smoke. No clacking. Nothing like that...

My '91 Explorer - A Lesson in Patience!

Kevin: Thanks for the inputs! I'll do the searches, too. 1. Know that the oil "pressure gage" in these trucks is not actually a gage. It will read normal if pressure is normal, and low if pressure is bad. It's a go, no-go kind of thing. Mechanic told me he thought it was just a bad...

My '91 Explorer - A Lesson in Patience!

I inherited my '91 Explorer 4WD from my mother-in-law when her husband (its owner) died. It has a PLETHORA of problems, so I thought I'd list them here and see what people think. Of the problems below, which ones would you fix, and if so, how would you fix them? (Keep in mind that I will...

    solenoid/starter prob - urgent

OK...I'm an idiot. I will never perform electrical stuff again. Labeling the wires does NO GOOD if you label them wrong. Tripp, please slap me next time I try anything with wiring, OK? Thanks, man!

    solenoid/starter prob - urgent

OK, I started it and the WD-40 did nothing. Still grinding. Not trying to turn it over, just not retracting I think. Also tried removing the push-on wire during start -- no effect.

    solenoid/starter prob - urgent

So Opera House -- Are you saying you think we wired these things wrong? I have the same problem (see my thread on starter grinding) after changing battery cables and so on. I DID mark the wires and I am pretty sure (99%) that they are right. Tripp -- if you find a solution, PLEASE let me...

    Starter Grinding AFTER Startup

I spoke with a Ford mechanic at the local dealer today. She said it is PROBABLY a bad starter, since that is what will cause the grinding in most cases. She also said it COULD be the ignition switch not clicking out of the start mode and therefore not telling the solenoid to disengage. I...

    Starter Grinding AFTER Startup

    No. No remote starter.

    Starter Grinding AFTER Startup

OK, so I did that. I disconnected the "S" cable from the solenoid relay and jumped it with a screwdriver. It started trying to turn the truck over, and when I released it, the started seemed to spin down. So I turned the ignition to the "ON" position (but did not start it) and did the same...

    Starter Grinding AFTER Startup

Andrew: Already put a new starter in. It did the same thing with the old and new starters. Thanks though.

    Starter Grinding AFTER Startup

And what would be the sequence of events on doing this? Have someone hold the wires to the solenoid while I crank it, then have them remove them? Sorry -- electrical stuff isn't my java, man.

    Starter Grinding AFTER Startup

You mean the relay solenoid in the engine compartment or the solenoid on the starter itself? Thanks for the advice. If I can get this thing running tomorrow (and take it to work Monday), it will save HUGE headaches.

    Starter Grinding AFTER Startup

Hey, folks. New guy here, trying like he!! to get my Explorer back up and running. Here's what happened -- I'd appreciate ANY help you folks can give. First off, I drive a 1991 Explorer. 4.0, 4WD. Two weeks ago, I went to turn it on and all I got was a loud click. I tried again and got...
