My A4LD is probably going to go bye-bye soon too. CLANKS every time it goes into neutral. I drive 17 miles to work and back each day at about 65-70 MPH, so I just hope that when it goes, it's at a lower speed...:)

OK, I started it and the WD-40 did nothing. Still grinding. Not trying to turn it over, just not retracting I think. Also tried removing the push-on wire during start -- no effect.

You mean the relay solenoid in the engine compartment or the solenoid on the starter itself? Thanks for the advice. If I can get this thing running tomorrow (and take it to work Monday), it will save HUGE headaches.
