Bought a used 2001 Explorer V6 brought it home last week...

Thanks, but I don't need any instructions for dropping a fuel tank and replacing the fuel pump. I've done many of them myself.

You need to check your fuel pressure before you start dropping that gas tank. If you don't have a fuel pressure gauge AA or AZ will loan you one for free. I'd change the fuel filter as a precaution since it's cheap, easy and never hurts doing it. Pulling that Explorer gas tank is a real pain.

    Tranny flush

The term "flush" is a completely different procedure and has nothing to do with a proper "transmission service" of draining, dropping the pan, changing the filter and adding fresh fluid. Anyone who suggests a "flush" is only looking for a quick buck all the while potentially destroying your...

    Tranny flush

A proper service consisting of drain, filter and fresh fluid will NEVER harm a transmission and very well could add service life. A flush does and will destroy a transmission. Any good mechanic knows this so you need to avoid those shops that don't know what their talking about.

Runs great when cold, power loss in closed loop, neg trims

I was having a similar issue so I tried Bosch O2's on my 2002 Explorer 4.0 and I had a CEL in a couple days and it ran like crap. I ordered Motorcraft O2's from Amazon and it ran perfectly. BTW, I've found Amazon to be the best place to purchase auto parts from, especially Motorcraft. Prices are...

    Tranny flush

All a "tranny flush" does is flush money out of your wallet and can ruin the transmission. The ONLY proper way to service a transmission is to drop the pan, replace the filter and fill with fresh fluid.

    Rough Idle

Have you ever cleaned the throttle body and plate? When they get dirty it can cause idling issues.

    Another dishonest Craigslist listing.

If you don't legally conceal carry you shouldn't do business on Craig's List. It's just that simple.

    Hello from sunny Seattle

"Sunny Seattle"????? Now that's a real oxymoron, well, except for the summer months when it's gorgeous out there. Long ago my Dad was transferred out there and I spent my high school years and another year beyond living in West Seattle. I did enjoy living there but did miss the sunshine from...

    '03 4.0L V6, cylinder 5 misfire

Have you pulled the #5 spark plug and see how it looks? Move it to another cylinder and see if the code follows. Always look for the easiest and most likely cause first.

Considering engine swap from 4.0 SOHC...

The 4.0 SOHC is a good engine that when taken care of can last 150,000 + miles. For less money and less hassle than replacing it with something else, why not get yours rebuilt with QUALITY parts and enjoy it for a long time.

    Starts but won't run

Could be any number of things and getting it scanned would be where to start. My first "guess" would be the TPS. In any case I doubt it's anything serious and should be easy to diagnose.

    Oil level overfill?

I really doubt anything serious happened to your engine. A one quart overfill isn't enough to damage an engine.

    Styrofoam noise in rear

Are you sure it isn't the spare tire rubbing against the pan? That could make a sound if the spare wasn't cinched down tight.

    2002 rear end issue

My 2002 XLT 4.0 SOHC is an 8.8 independent axle and not a solid axle. I believe independent rear axles were standard on Explorers and solids were only on Rangers.

mechanic problems!!! don't know where to post

Do you have a CEL (check engine light) on? Have you scanned it for active or pending codes?

4.0 sohc falling on it's face for a millisecond...?

That's a great resource. Unfortunately, what they don't cover is that a defective or failing DPFE Sensor very often creates short duration intermittent problems. It can test perfect one minute and have an intermittent failure the next. That's the nature of the beast with these sensors. For less...

4.0 sohc falling on it's face for a millisecond...?

Like I replied very early in this thread, a defective or failing DPFE Sensor causes this exact symptom. I know because I chased this exact problem on my 4.0 SOHC. It doesn't throw a code and is intermittent so it is very difficult to track down. Buy a real Motorcraft one (do not buy the cheap...

Instrument Cluster Tire pressure Light Not working

TPMS is a real PITA and not worth the agravation or cost. Just wait until you have pay to get your tires unmounted, replace bad senders an have the tires remounted and balanced. Really easy to drop $500.00 for a worthless "safety" feature.

05 Headliner starting to come down

Just do a Google search for headliner repair in your area. You can get it completely replaced for $150 or less with a guarantee. Mine only cost $120 and looks as good as new.

2002 Explorer idles high when slowing down

Temp could affect it. I still would clean the throttle body because the carbon would cause the throttle plate to stick. If you have more than 75k on the odometer it needs cleaned no matter what.

2002 Explorer idles high when slowing down

Have you cleaned the throttle body and plate? If not, do so, a carbon buildup there could cause your problems. Only use "Throttle Body Cleaner" and definetely not "Carb Cleaner".

    F150 fenders

The Explorer shares the same platform as the Ranger and some of those front body parts will interchange. The F150 is a larger and entirely different platform and shares it with the Expedition. Bottom line, F150 fenders will absolutely not fit the Explorer without a lot of cutting, forming and...

4.0 sohc falling on it's face for a millisecond...?

Yup, mine once went 2-1/2 weeks between episodes but usually it was every 3,4,5 days or so and it never threw a code. One time I almost got rearended and that was the real frustrating thing. From all my research this is definetely a symptom of a failing DPFE sensor. Hope you get yours sorted...

New member with a couple of questions

Yeah, I looked it up in my shop manual and in 2004 Ford incorporated the DPFE sensor into the EGR assembly so your only choice is to replace the whole unit. If you do it yourself it can be done for a little over $100 and and hour or so of your time. Be sure to soak the EGR pipe connection with a...
