    radical axle idea

Sorry, I just realized what SAS means (duh!) I thought it was a commercially made kit or something. I have extended radius arms on a 5.5 lift and am looking for the simplest way to do the SAS! JB

    radical axle idea

I've looked for a bronco disc brake axle , but haven't found one yet. Is there detailed info anywhere on doing that swap? Also ive done searches and found posts referring to it, but what exactly is an SAS? thanks JB

    radical axle idea

Hi everyone, Having suffered for years with front axle and allignment problems, I wish I had put in a straight axle to begin with. Someone told me they once welded the front axle halves together and detached the axle drop down bracket to make a psuedo-straight axle. He said it worked until...

    tailgat light switch?

Thanks everyone, I forgot it was so simple, with the latch. Probably going to the Drive in next weekend, but I didn't want to spend a half hour of the movie figuring that out. Our drive in is in NE PA, near Wilkes Barre. If you check our driveinn.com, or driveinns.com, they list all the...

    tailgat light switch?

Hi, Anybody know where the switch is to turn the dome lights OFF when the tailgate is UP? I found it once a long time ago, but can't remember now. This for drive-in movie time!! thanks much JB

Wow! thanks for all the info and links. One more question. What year tranny can I use? Are there any differences or is any year better than another? thanks again!!!

    auto->manual tranny swap?

Thanks The work will be done by my mechanic. I'm assuming I'll have less trouble in the long run with the standard (33" tires, towing) I figure I'll pick up a mile or two a gallon as well, not to mention being able to pop start it when my starter goes. If this is a 92 model year cahnge...

    auto->manual tranny swap?

Hi All, My tranny started slipping recently, so I'm looking at options. Never heard of a rebuild that held up so I'm thinking about a standard instead. Anybody ever do this? How frustrating is it likely to be? Thanks JB

    Yakima wind things

Hi boats, Sportsrack.com has the Thule and their own brand of fairings. They're a great company to buy from and I think they have an online sale right now. One warning: the instructions say that the fairing must be mounted CLOSE to the windshield. I still haven't put mine in because my...

    spare tire problem

Hi BUBBLE, If you do a search here in the forums for "tire carrier" you'll find a bunch of threads on this subject. there are at least 4 manufacturers making carriers that will fit Explorers. Some need minor modification or new bumpers to fit JB

    Suggestions for Batteries!

I called Exide and was told that their larger marine battery has more CCA's than a regular battery, plus can be Deep Discharged (for a winch) I was told that marine batteries are built tougher than car batteries,i.e the plates are attached in more spots. It is NOT maintenance free however. I...

    Snorkle?

Hi, I've been thinking about a snorkel for a while but there doesn't seem to be a place to put it through the quarter panel without major rewiring. I had this thought though: What about running straight up through the hood to a louver/grill? (I always hated the look of that, but it would...

    Powertrax No-slip Locker install

Hi Mav, I read that thread but I think It refers mostly to '95 and up. I have a91 with the regular dana 35 so I think there are lockers to fit without too much trouble. JB

    Custom Tire Carrier Pics

Andre, I can't imagine trying to get a tire/wheel off the roof in the rain or snow. You're also right to worry about center of gravity. I'm back and forth between buying one (just to get it over with) and making one (if I can find a day and some 1" nylon bushings) JB

    winch rate pull???

If it's free then use it for now, I have a superwinch X3 (4000 lbs?) and it's worked OK the 2 times I used it. neither was in deep mud or with a heavy truck. I'm about to upgrade to at least an 8000 lb winch As Matt said, the Explorer(with big tires and the usual stuff inside ) weighs at...

    gas mieage???

Hi Mitch, As far as mileage goes, it's "all over the board" (excuse the pun) Gears and installation for both front and rear will cost you close to a grand, depending on where you live. It's well worth having a lim slip or locker put in at the same time. JB

    Powertrax No-slip Locker install

Hi, Does anyone know if the Powertrax is available for the Dana35ifs, (front axle)? I have a Detroit Truetrac in the rear that I'm really happy with, but I figure for the front I can use a locker, since I'm usually only in 4wd off road. I used the LS(instead of a locker) in the rear because I...

What gear ratio should I look for.

I don't know about overheating a manual, but I think those gears are way to high for 33's. You'll get very little downhill engine braking, and they won't be low enough for serious climbing. It MIGHT be acceptable with an automatic, though. JB

    Suggestions for Batteries!

Hi Jim What I mean is: what would the trade off be between an Optima and a marine battery. The marine battery is 1/2 the price. JB

    Custom Tire Carrier Pics

Hi Clark, Is your license plate still visible with the carrier in place? Also, is there any chance that the glass would open without opening the carrier(even if you had to modify it so the tire was lower?) Thanks JB

    Suggestions for Batteries!

'Mornin, Any thoughts on a marine deep cycle/starting battery. Seems like they're designed to do exactly what the yellow top Optima is. (minus the vibration resistance maybe?) JB

What gear ratio should I look for.

I have 4.10's with 32"tires. I wish I had put 4.56, mostly because when my truck wants to be in overdrive the RPM's are too low. I end up shifting into 3rd alot. Engine braking on downhills would be better too. JB
