AC bypass. What size belt to bypass the AC compressor ?

A/C compressor is ceased and just want to be able to drive it until I get the compressor replaced. Any way to have the serpentine belt bypass the A/C compressor? All my searches are just returning previous generation explorer how-tos and options.

It fired right up without the belt

Well, turns out that is some bad news. The alternator is indeed locked up... as is the A/C compressor. Ugh. Neither one budge at all.

Got the belt off and the explorer fired right up. Have a new alternator and belt on order.

I’ll most definitely update this thread as I work this out. Right now I know that the alternator is locked up. I’m going to remove the belt and verify the A/C compressor is turning fine. Then I’ll be replacing the alternator and may as well drop a new belt in there as well.

I understand. Again, I am comfortable with the choices I made before reaching out for help. Could I have made other choices - sure, but I didn’t and I’m ok with that. I have several cars that don’t get enough “exercise” so the trickle chargers are certainly here. I certainly will try...

Couldn't wait until tomorrow. Something is certainly locked up. I am not seeing the alternator spin. Here is a video clip

Thank you. I’ll take a look at that when the light is cooperating. That certainly seems possible as this problem “just occurred” in the few weeks between uses.

Certainly now that it has been narrowed to a mechanical problem, clearly beyond what I’m comfortable with taking on, as opposed to the electrical problem which I presumed, I will be having it towed in. I greatly appreciate everyone’s assistance on this board. Perhaps I am misreading your tone...

I feel this is the case as well at this point. This vehicle ran just fine when I parked it last, which at this point might be around June. I tried to use is again in probably July which is when it failed to run. Been working on it since then. Now with no plugs in the engine it still...

    Won’t Start, Smoke by starter

Last time I drove the vehicle I had no issues. This is maybe a once a month or so driver. When I went to use it I couldn't start and couldn't jump it. Took the battery in and they just handed me a new one, no test of the battery. That didn't work. So I swapped out the starter - no change...

With plugs out still no change. Turns over hard. Now it sounds like there is metal on metal contact when I turn it over.

    Won’t Start, Smoke by starter

The last time I drove this it was all working fine. I park it on a concrete slab in the back yard. Just wouldn’t start the next time I went to use it. Oil level was fine and no exposure to anything I would expect would cause any hydro-locking.

The wiring harness had both the positive and negative sides all in one.

Well, it is a brand new battery and a brand new wiring harness from the battery to everywhere so there is nothing needing cleaning.

No go with a boost either. Does it seem probable that I’d have the same issue with two different starters?

It turns over a few times but stops. Similar to a low battery crank or dead of winter crank. It isn’t turning over as normal. After attempting to crank it a couple times smoke starts to come up off the starter itself.

    Won’t Start, Smoke by starter

I have been trying to troubleshoot why my 2012 Ford Explorer won’t start. Symptoms are that it cranks over hard without starting and after attempting a few times I get smoke coming off the starter. What I’ve replaced: Battery, Starter (which has the relay/solenoid attached), and Starter...
