5th gen Explorer issues stopping on ice

Quick update...we come down this morning on areas of solid ice (22 degrees last night and the snow had been driven on...about as slick as it can be). Sand mode, manual in 1st and used the brakes very gently (no hill descent)...only slid once and was able to quickly correct. Looking at snow tires...

5th gen Explorer issues stopping on ice

I did notice this symbol in the far lower right corner when in mud or sand mode. I believe this is “traction control off”. Not sure what exactly that means but I’d did still have torque distribution to all wheels as needed according to the message center on the left. I will say that mud/sand...

5th gen Explorer issues stopping on ice

I did get a chance to try out some of the suggestions this evening. We left around 4:30 this evening...temps were around 28-29 with some crunchy ice and some slick ice on our road (similar to the last time that I had trouble...possibly a bit thicker and longer distances than before). 1. First...

5th gen Explorer issues stopping on ice

We ended up getting 12” +\-. Hoping to try out the hill descent tomorrow! The plow is a diy setup that I built from scrap steel and a plastic 55 gal barrel...lol! The irony is, I had a friends 45 horsepower Massey with a loader here for some repairs all the way up til Saturday evening...about 2...

5th gen Explorer issues stopping on ice

Yes Sir...I’ve tried that (in snow mode and normal mode)...manual gear number 1...works great in slush or dry gravel but a little to fast for ice on our drive. Nw I might could do all that and try hill descent with it and maybe find a winner!

5th gen Explorer issues stopping on ice

You know...Tire age is a great point...I’ll check the date codes! I’m not sure they are “locking up”...at least not completely...I can hear/feel the abs system working...it just slides all over the place in the rear end. I was looking at some studded tires on eBay earlier...may give that a shot...

5th gen Explorer issues stopping on ice

All very good points...what are the best tires I can buy for my circumstance on the Explorer in 245/60/18s. I don’t care what they cost if My wife can make it to the highway safely. Should be able to try the hill descent tomorrow...we have about a foot of snow now and still coming so I’ll plow...

5th gen Explorer issues stopping on ice

Most of the ice melted today so I didn’t get much opportunity to try anything different but maybe these photos will help describe my situation. It’s steep but nothing I would worry about normally.

5th gen Explorer issues stopping on ice

I have not tried the hill descent on ice yet but several have recommended I give it a shot. Weather man says we could be looking at 18+ inches between now and Monday evening so I will have the opportunity!

5th gen Explorer issues stopping on ice

The tires are 75% tread Michelin LTX m/s...same as my truck. If a set of tires will fix %90...even 75% of the problem I don’t care at all to order a set tonight! Just want my wife and family to feel safe like they did in the Excursion. I considered chains with ice bars but then she would have to...

5th gen Explorer issues stopping on ice

Sorry, I should be more clear. When I put my truck in 4wd...all 4 wheels pull or hold back in together. My wife had an Excursion before this Explorer and it worked the same as my truck. Whether pulling or coasting or holding back going down hill, all 4 wheels are locked together. Therefore (in...

5th gen Explorer issues stopping on ice

Quick question...when you say “ awd does nothing for down hills”...are you saying that the rear tires on my Explorer will not engage with the driveline when I’m heading down hill even if they are slipping? I ask that because I been wondering if that’s the case all day long. If those rear tires...

5th gen Explorer issues stopping on ice

You know I thought about trying a set of tires but the Explorer has the same thing my truck does and it has no issue. I thought about ordering some studded tires but if it’s not gonna make much difference I’d rather just buy my wife a truck to drive till spring. I haven’t been backing down...

5th gen Explorer issues stopping on ice

I’m sure this is probably covered elsewhere but I didn’t see my exact issue so here goes. We just got our 2013 Explorer a few weeks back. I’m completely new to the intelligent 4wd system. We live on a steep curvey drive. We have had a fair amount of light snows that turn to ice quickly overnight...

2013 Ford Explorer limited central hub USB and SD slot issue

Thanks for the reply! I pulled my unit the other day to find that it had been wet before as well (sticky goo left behind when a soft drink is spilled was all over it). I ordered a used unit from eBay and hope to have it by this weekend.

    Bad media interface??

Pulled the media interface today to find a thick, sticky substance all over it and inside it (kinda like the stuff left behind when a spilled soft drink dries out). I ordered a new one from eBay and will report back once it’s installed. I’m hoping this is the issue. Thanks for your help!

    Bad media interface??

Yes..”Navigation fault” on the driver display and “insert nav sd” on the center console. Also...I did reformat the usb a few times and download the software to the laptop first then copied to the usb. The reason I wondered if the media interface was bad is because I can’t use the USB ports to...

    Bad media interface??

The update was from the ford website...it is the most updated version...I just can’t get it loaded to my explorer. I feel Ike something is wrong with the media interface it’s self.

    Bad media interface??

I have the sync 2 with an 8" screen and navigation (not sure if that what you mean by "version"). My software hasn't been updated since late 2012 according to my account at owner.ford.com. I received the car with an A4 SD...the later version i ordered was an A6. I did message a tech from an APIM...

    Bad media interface??

This may be covered elsewhere but I didn’t see anything on it. If someone is aware of an existing thread please direct me there. Our 2013 explorer (recently purchased to replace a totaled Excursion) is having issues with the Navigation. I get a message that says “insert nav sd card” on the...
