My New Ride (97) & SOHC Question

Now that's interesting, never knew about those SOHC recalls. How would one find out if a particular Ex actually got those recall fixes?

    Redesigning center console?

Of course you are correct. I tend to think of it as a whole unit with the console. Got so many things to catch up on my Ex that will go on the back burner but it's a lot of less than useful space!

    Redesigning center console?

Will be following this thread for sure. My center console in good shape but much of the space is wasted/unusable. Looking to see what other consoles will fit in the same spot. (has 2 spots where gauges could be but weren't ordered by the original owner)

Anybody seen this rig / post on forum here before ?

After reading your post, saw his You Tube channel. First time I've seen it but he's doing a lot of what I'd like to try!

    Hood release cable

Update: It took me until today to get back to this! Didn't have fishing line but used crochet cotton, went well but not finished putting latch back on due to darkness. Definitely helped in pulling new cable through, didn't have to move the battery either, which is good cause that sucker is...

Anyone interested in green interior parts?

Can you show a pic of the console lid? Not sure what green my interior is, but the outside is Pacific Green apparently.

Loose gear shifter... and what is this bolt?

Update - I did get both screws into place on the gear shift thing under the dash. Took forever. Recent weeks noticed it was getting harder to shift gears. Have been way too busy looking for an apartment and putting things in storage. Until Thursday last week...Was coming from about 12 miles...

    Serpentine Belt Sizing

FWIW, the Motorcraft belt I used (went on fine only after using the belt tensioner tool with its extension) is the one for air conditioned Explorers (98 XLT) The Motorcraft part number is XL2Z8620DA

Just bought a 98, now fixing it up

If that plastic piece on the driver's door (goes on top of the window switches) is actually missing, I have a tan one you can have for the price of shipping only! (NOS I got, just to get the switches out) Otherwise going to throw it out. PM me if interested!

What is the best oil for high mileage 4.0 SOHC??

Huh? I've been using 10w30 full synthetic, and previous owners apparently 10w30 synthetic blend. Supposed to go to 5w30 or 5w20??? Did I miss something? 176K on it, if that's relevant.

    Serpentine Belt Sizing

Thanks for the input! By any chance, can a water pump rattle when it gets worn? I'm beginning to wonder about what the mechanic told me last year, was the source of the rattle (sounds rather like a loose heat shield does, but under the hood.)

    Serpentine Belt Sizing

Appreciate all the advice! Routing is good, the diagram is handy! Will be double checking that the Motorcraft belt I have is indeed the right one...But it's been complicated by the fact that to the L of the tensioner and above it, are 2 hoses with hard sections that the tool runs into. I'm...

    Can it be fixed?

That's a beauty at a great price! But I still need a 4x4 here. Do keep them coming! Sadly all my $ is earmarked for the next month at least :(

    Can it be fixed?

Good ideas! This area seems rather close to the gas tank. Already found I've no aptitude for welding, so if that's done, somebody else will have to do it! Although the paint and interior are great in my Ex, I'd love to find one rust free! To boot, I'm in the middle of a rather unexpected move...

    Can it be fixed?

You're up in Canada, wherever do you find clean trucks (little rust)? I did find this on the net, so far: 1998 Ford Explorer OEM Chassis Frames & Body Parts — CARiD.com Have one JY locally, doubt trucks around here aren't rustier than mine. Have replacement rockers, BUT: what other year...

    Serpentine Belt Sizing

It is easier with that tool = long flat bar with a square on the end, would be too tight otherwise. Using the Motorcraft belt, new Dayco idler pulley and new tensioner. Having a helluva time getting the belt back on!

    Can it be fixed?

Found a lot of rust (swear it wasn't there last year) on the frame part going from a body mount to the outside frame, below the driver's seat! Is this fatal or can it be fixed or replaced? I know somebody that can weld, I can't. Picture coming soon.

    Serpentine Belt Sizing

Funny you mentioned that, I have to do the same job on my Ex - the Motorcraft belt I bought, is actually longer than the unknown brand belt that's on it now! Idler that was on it, obvious doesn't turn smoothly. Changing the tensioner idler and belt cause mechanic told me (last year!) it was...
