Another transmission won't go after fluid change

Original poster here, again. Now 335K miles on the same transmission, still no issues. First transmission, first engine, and yes sometimes I tow. Nobody more surprised than me. Retired in May; but still looking for time to schedule shade tree mechanic work. Todo list still filled with her...

How to: Remove and replace door latch assembly

Thanks everybody for all the tips - another great thread that highlights how incredibly helpful this forum is. Did this job yesterday on the two rear doors on my high mileage (315K miles, still on the first engine and first transmission!) 1998 XLT. I also got stuck at step #8 - tried and tried...

Another transmission won't go after fluid change

Original poster here - I'm up to 315K miles on the same transmission, still no issues! A little nostalgic about this thread - looking forward to retiring to have more time for this shade tree mechanic stuff. Thanks again to everybody who's contributed to this forum.

    Highest original parts mileage

In post #72 I'd reported 250K miles on my '98 XLT SOHC - I just passed 300K miles still on original engine and transmission. Since post #72 I've done: replaced both lower ball joints replaced idle air controller replaced upper and lower intake manifold gaskets, and while there replaced the...

Cruise control steering wheel switch replacement

Thanks to all Great thread - thanks to all the contributors. Took me about an hour, but that's because I'm crazy slow on just about everything. Most of the time was spent documenting progress as recommended. Turned out not to be needed but it might well have saved my bacon so it was time...

    4.0 SOHC plastic thermostat housing

Successful repair Over the weekend I successfully replaced the lower thermostat housing. Here are my notes. First: A. Fantastic writeups and part numbers made this possible. Wow. Thanks. B. What a PITA. C. This job flirted with the limits of my mechanical ability - I was in the deep...

Another transmission won't go after fluid change

Update: Still going strong I was reminded of my promise to update this thread: So far so good - now 255K miles on the original tranny. Still not sure you can read too much into my experiences.

    Highest original parts mileage

Just passed 250K miles In post #49 I'd reported 225K miles on my '98 XLT SOHC - I just passed 250K miles still on original engine and transmission. Since post #49 I've done: replaced both lower ball joints replaced sway bar bushings repaired from passenger door handle springs fixed rear...

How to: How To: Drivers Exterior Door Handle Replacement

Spring photos Yesterday I finally got around to repairing my passenger side front floppy door handle problem. This photo shows (from the top) the remains of the original handle spring, and the spring from the Tru Value hardware commercial spring bin (evidently 'bin 27'): I bent the Tru...

2nd Gen Shock installation write up - All four corners

More thanks Thanks for the write-up, it was just what I needed to do this job on my '98 XLT. The tip about using a section of pipe over the end of an open ended wrench to loosen difficult to reach nuts was very helpful. I probably would have figured this out on my own eventually, this...

ATTN: Owners With Gen II Explorers - Look at your Gas Pedal

Wheel well tip Had this happen on my '98 two nights ago. Scary, then hilarious 'hey, I've lost my gas pedal!' It's probably obvious to experts, but here's a tip for us rookies: Jack up, jack stand and remove the driver's side front wheel and pull out the lower wheel well skirt to get access...

Another transmission won't go after fluid change

She lives! I put everything back together and refilled following the instructions given by CDW6212R on post #7 of this thread: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1731879&highlight=hatched#post1731879 Everything works fine. I'm going to let the dust settle a few days...

Another transmission won't go after fluid change

Pan bolt torque specs Pan bolt torque specs are 98-115 inch pounds according to this thread: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=211658&highlight=pan+bolts+torque The specs are evidently given in the ATSG 5R55E manual, though I don't own one so I can't confirm it.

Another transmission won't go after fluid change

My goof I checked the fluid flow at the input to the aux cooler and found flow. Hooked the lines up again and checked for flow at the output of the aux cooler: again no flow. Ah ha! Clogged aux cooler! Negative - red herring as you'll see later. I hooked things back up and proceeded with...

Another transmission won't go after fluid change

Thanks guys - it's surprisingly reassuring to have experts double checking me. I like BLee1099's theory of an EPC issue. That's consistent with all the discusson in the VB rebuild diary thread. I'm not sure if it's consistent with no flow at all out of the cooler, but I'll know better when...

Another transmission won't go after fluid change

I was using the method described by Aldive in entry #12 of this post: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=77507&highlight=fluid You add a quart, start the car and have it pump out a quart, then stop the car and repeat until the output fluid is clean. So yes, the...

Another transmission won't go after fluid change

More info I double checked the fluid level - it was good, but I intentionally overfilled it slightly - just above the cross hatch on the dipstick. Checked the shift linkage - fine. But here we go: no flow out of the cooler. Hmm. So something bad happened after I finished the 'dialysis'...

Another transmission won't go after fluid change

Low Fluid Level? Thanks for the suggestions guys. Yes, I like the low fluid theory and I'll grant that I'm having some difficulty convincing myself of what the cold and warm levels really are. It was easier with dirty ATF! With the new fluid in it's hard to distinguish a true level mark...

Mercon V I'm using Mercon V. Granted, not high end Mercon V but just the Castrol Mercon V that Autozone carries.

Another transmission won't go after fluid change

Sorry Bob, The first sentence is the question - the rest is background: My high mileage (226K) '98 XLT SOHC 4wd now won't shift at all following a fluid change - can anybody recommend threads that I should check?

Another transmission won't go after fluid change

My high mileage (226K) '98 XLT SOHC 4wd now won't shift at all following a fluid change - can anybody recommend threads that I should check? I've studied the 5R55E VB rebuild diary (since it looks like that might be in my future). And I've found several threads warning me to not do what I've...
