Has anyone heard both the 40 and the 50 series Flowmaster

I know he's already bought his, but just FYI Borla mufflers give a REAL deep sound on 4.0's I love it on mine. I'd record it, but unless I bring my explorer into this room I can't get a mic close enough. (and I don't think this mic would do it justice.

How can I make my 98 Sport V6 (not SOHC) perform better?

ditto on the chip/intake/exhaust, those are the only "cheap" things that will get you anywhere. Everything else gets real expensive, oh except figure out what rearend ratio you have, if it's 3.43 you could go with 3.73 for better acceleration (worse gas mileage, it's all a tradeoff)

Temperate Woes: Where is the coolant going?

Also, look under the vehicle for loss that direction, if there is some, but it seems to far back to be the radiator, it's probably one of the freeze plugs in the block that has rusted out, those aren't too tough to have replaced (I had that prob 2 summers ago, it was leaking about a quart /...

    Spark Plug Question

I'd just get whatever they say is for your vehicle, it's 3 bucks more per plug per 60k miles, heck, with gas prices about to go up, that should be the least of your worries.

    clicking

are we talking a "knocking" or pinging sound, like does the engine jump? how intermitant is it? is it only when in gear and floored? What engine? A clicking sounds more like valves / lifters, and nothing you had done should have affected that, whereas if it's a pinging then obviously...

    Engine Ticking

the "tighten something up" was a joke, hence the quotes, (sorry inflection is difficult to portray in typing). The just of what I was saying was if it doesn't sound like somethings breaking, don't worry about it.

dito to what Alec said, sometimes them t-sips know what they are talking about :D

    Engine Ticking

if it doesn't sound like something is breaking, I'd guess it's just the normal lifter ticking that lots of us have. I don't worry about it, some people do, maybe you should tighten something if it's bothering you.....

    Spark Plug Questions!!!

there's a huge, not too old thread with a LOT of discussion about platinum vs not and everything else, do a search for it. Also the equiv plugs should be like 4 bucks from any parts store, don't buy parts at a dealer.

    HELP! 5speed Doing odd Things!

hmmm, how loud is it? How many miles on the trans? I would check the level of the fluid, check for the freeze plugs (do a search on the forum for tranny plugs) make sure those are there. I think the whole being difficult to go into gear is kinda normal, mine does it, my friends does too, I...

    Best plugs for 92 X

Ok, I now understand what you're saying. I did not know that it worked that way, and now I'm curious and going to have to verify that from some other source (for my own fullfillment), not how the electrical nature works but the fact that they are "paired" I was under the impression that it was...

    Best plugs for 92 X

so you're saying the polarity is reversed on 1/2 the cylinders? I dunno but that just doesn't sound right, and really the nature of a spark it doesn't really "start" on one side and end on the other, the spark is due to the (large) potential difference between the center electrode (platinum)...

    Best plugs for 92 X

jimmie, forgive me, but I"m a little confused on what exactly your saying.... I believe the idea behind platinum plugs is that the platinum post prevents buildup better than a non-platinum, the "arm" if you will doesn't typicall have that buildup but maybe I'm off base on what you're saying or...

    Best plugs for 92 X

use any platinum plugs that are equiv to the OEM I used bosch but any should do, splitfires +4s or whatever don't help, the ONLY thing they would do, is if your engine is fouling plugs, it may take a little longer to fail, it will NEVER spark to more than one post, it doesn't work that way. As...

where can I get gofast goodies for 4.0?

But dude, those are MAGIC pistons :D I don't think anyone else really deals with modded 4.0 motors, it's kinda a shame.

    Manual transmission leak

you SURE? it's not the plugs? other than that ummm maybe ask a tranny shop, or just stick RTV sealant all around the leaking seal, that or duct tape

Major Damage to my '92 - Engine troubles

sounds like head gasket maybe, SELL IT!!! if it's got that many miles on it 1200 is a good deal (for you) especially since it's not in running condition, once again, sell it.

    Exhaust Question

You definately get a HP boost, that's for sure. MPG maybe, I didn't but I'm sure the more constant flooring to hear the fun tones of the exhaust contributed to that.

    Factory Amp And New HU?

ALWAYS BYPASS never use something to drop the level, it rarely works well.
  22. J

    Well...finally blown the sub

Just FYI the MTX is sweeeeeeeeeeeet get a 200Wrms amp (with lowpass filter) and it's awesome. Hey find someone who's a member of United Consumers Club (UCC) and have them order the MTX box, it's literally like 1/2 price.

    Cost of Plugs/wires/labor

I think most of the 4.0's have that slight surge from the factory (it's not a defect, it's an attribute) plugs / wires may be expensive, the plugs are kinda a pain, my suggestion is do it yourself :-) Get some decent Wires (Bosch, or ummm whatever the other people like (use the search...

    Lifter or Ping problem?

the 4.0's have noisy lifters anyway. 1st thing, check oil level even 1/2 quart down will make (at least for me) a large difference in lifter noise. Also oil type / brand can make a diff. I get less noise when I use a synthetic blend (Valvoliene or Mobil 1), but this last time I got lazy and...

    Borla?

yes, they do. someone siad something about them being discontinued, but I don't think that's correct. I'd check out www.truckperformance.com or someplace like that. I have one on my 93 sport and it's sweet.

    9 mpg at 50/50

you might check the plugs and wires (go ahead and change them) I was getting 21 on highway, now I get 24ish (5sp helps).
  27. J

    Cleaning the Spark Plugs

if you have the 4.0 ohv then trust me, you'll want to go ahead and change them. EITHER WAY, stick anti-seize on the threads so that they won't ever freeze, trying to get them out after 92k miles with them never being removed is NO FUN, TRUST ME, BEEN THERE DONE THAT.
  28. J

    my new exhuast idea

also, right now, with the cat, the CO may not be a problem, b/c the cat removes most of it (that's kinda the point) but if you remove the cat, all the "bad" stuff that it takes out will be being released, not just to the atmosphere, but into the passenger compartment, this is VERY dangerous...
  29. J

What mufflers do you guys have/reccomend?

the "advantage" to a full catback system is that they are typically engineered to not have any resonance at any speed, this is nice b/c it would stink to find the speed at which you resonate to be at highway cruising, you can get some of the cheaper cat-backs for about 250 if you look around.

    Performance of everyone's Explorer

oh, yeah if you want to get technical, it was at an 1/8 mile dragstrip, in texas, freaking hot. I had on a set of 94 Cobra wheels with very worn 255/50 17's so I assume that lowered my gear ratio, time would've been better with a limited slip diff.

    KKM and pinging

yes, that is the correct installation, I bent the unplugged one in half and zip tied it to something, I dunno that that will help out (as opposed to it being open, bending it so it's "kinked" is more like having it closed, I don't have any idea if it makes a difference, that's just how my...

    KKM intake in winter

I didn't remove mine either, but it's no longer sealed to the box (duh) and thus some of the air is not being heated before going back to the engine, dunno that it matters, I haven't had probs starting, I was mearly stating that it warms up a lot slower in the cold, I love my KKM
  35. J

    plug wires please help

I got Bosch wires, they are nice (pre-greased and all). Some people suggest a little wider gap with "performance" wires, I went ahead and did that, seems to work fine. don't get an ignition upgrade, but if you want the MSD one, email me and we'll talk (I bought one, but haven't ever installed it).

Borla muffler with pipes put on seperately

Lazy S is the actual inside of the muffler design (you can see right through it). It won't sound the same, the nature of waves means that anything with different piping will sound different. It should however still have the real low frequency "grumble" b/c that comes mostly from the muffler...

    KKM and pinging

I live in texas, have a 93 sport, and a KKM never had any pinging problems with it, and that includes when my car was overheating (umm yeah rusted freeze plug out of engine) and this has been for the last 4 summers(110 degrees on countless days, we set some record 2 years ago for days over 100...

    KKM intake in winter

Just a slight warning though dude, cold air creates more power, but with the KKM you are removing the heat riser. This is fine after the car warms up but I've noticed (and I only live in Texas) that it takes WAY longer for the engine to warm up around here, and when I cruise on the highway in...

    BEST COMPUTER CHIP FOR PERFORMANCE?

I believe it's the Diablosport that has the option of a chip where you can select it to use either premium gas, or a less "power" mode to use just regular.

    tips on exhaust...please

Putting it 3" on the way out is going to not only be "loud" but sound stupid (IMO) a lot of the volume with be from resonance in that huge 3" pipe and it will not be a "good" sound, and depending on all kinda things like length, twistiness, you could setup a situation for really REALLY annoying...
