91 Explorer Sport
This being my first post to this awesome site i hate to bring bad news, but my 91 explorer sport is sick unfortunately. I just picked it up 2 days ago and now for some reason i have a bad noise coming from the trans area i believe.

Its weird, only happens when stopped....in gear and clutch pedal to the floor while not moving. It will be fine at first then once in a while a loud wiiiirrrrrrrrr noise and slight vibration comes from the tranny area (atleast that is where i think it is coming from). When i lift clutch and little and barely move forward it goes away.

So, only happens while stopped, in gear idling...

Sometimes while stopped in neutral and i go to any gear it will not want to go in and make the same noise. I really dont think it is a synchro or trans problem because it is a occasional problem...sometimes wont happen for 20miles...then it will start.

I appreciate any and all help and suggestions...

Thanks in advance,

Nate

hmmm, how loud is it? How many miles on the trans?
I would check the level of the fluid, check for the freeze plugs (do a search on the forum for tranny plugs) make sure those are there. I think the whole being difficult to go into gear is kinda normal, mine does it, my friends does too, I think it's the nature of the beast, I pretty much always have to "double tap" first gear.

If it only makes the noise when the clutch pedal is to the floor, the first thing I would suspect is the throwout bearing. The not going into gear problem could be the clutch is not fully disengaging when the pedal is pressed. This could be caused by air in the hydraulic system, low clutch fluid, or either the master or slave cylinder is failing. Since you are new to the Explorer world, you might not know that the slave cylinder and the throwout bearing are a combined unit. Even though you can buy the bearing seperately, your best bet is to replace them both as a unit, since you have to go through the trouble of dropping the transmission to replace them.

Definately sounds like a throwout bearing problem like Okrazie1 said. Another thing you might want to consider is to just go ahead and replace the pressure plate and clutch plate, and resurface the flywheel (if it needs it) while you are in there. Most of the cost is in the labor anyways, so why pay it twice? If you still have the original clutch in it, I would suspect that it's getting near the end of it's life anyways.

This gonna be hard to do if i try to fix it myself? I have done everything myself on my other 2 vehicles...from tranny drops to suspension work.

If i did have a shop tackle it how much labor/parts are we talking here? Also, what kinda clutch should i go for? And anyone have any links to explorer vendors? I am having troubles trying to find any.

I wanna order my 5.5" superlift and my shackles/hubs!

Thanks again guys,

Nate
