Is $500 for thunderform and 4 speakers a good deal?

I went through this decision making process with my thunderform too. The amp'd version is your big issue. If you go non-amp'd and add a separate amplifier you will be cheaper, have more power, and sound flexibility. The down side is more wiring and need to put an amp somewhere. I chose the...

    headunit replacement

If you have been to all those sites then you must have skipped over it. I have the same radio and truck. You need the Scosche FD16 (Walmart) or Metra 70-1770. Although only 14 pins are used its a 16 pin harness. That harness is the only one you need for the radio (4 speakers plus pwr and...

What bypass do i need to run stock HU and aftermarket sub amp?

Below is some info I typed up when intallings my amps to the factory HU in my 98. I used a peripheral VEN4 LOC (you need just 2 ch). I too put the LOC behind the HU and ran RCAs to the amp under the rear seat. The sound was very good IMO. What made me eventually go aftermarket HU was the...

    Adding AMP to stock HU.

I did this with my 98 with 2 amps - one sub, one 4 channel. Although you can get a scoche LOC in walmart I wanted a bit better so I got a peripheral VEN4 that converted all 4 speakers to RCA line level, then using a Y cable split the front RCA cables and fed the sub amp. Worked well. In your...

    Adding an amp...!

Naah, use the yellow/black (stock color) switched 12V wire. Its energized only when the truck is running or the key is in acc position. Your amp will be on as long as the truck is running and turn off when its not. That way no draining of battery and no switch needed.

    Amp, sub, stock system....

Yep, I did a 4 ch amp plus sub&amp off of stock 98 system. See this recent post for some of my details. It sounded real good but the big issue that caused me to go to aftermarket was the fact that the stock HU rolls off the bass at higher volumes. So every time I turned it up past 1/2 vol I had...

    Infinity Speaker Disappointment

Kamaaina, I still have all my wiring pieces from when I had a 4 ch amp running from my stock 98 prem HU using RCAs. I wanted to use stock speaker wiring and did not want to cut wires so it was a three part thing . A metra 71-1771 harness plugged into the stock HU and it's speakers wires only...

    Sub Out on Head Unit

I would use the 2v sub out connection. That way you keep the sub control functionality of the head unit. The higher the voltage the less chance noise will sneak into your amp plus usually higher voltage allows you to turn down the gains on your amp. Having said that with subs you can't hear the...

CAN IT BE TRUE? PANASONIC Panasonic MXE CQ-C9800U

Nope, its 60 X4. Check crutchfield again and compare to other head units. Crutch just says RMS in the specs not how many channels. Ever since I bought my little class T amp I read up on this technology. Its close to 2 X more efficient with input power so thats why it can get 260 from a 15 amp...

    New 6x9's Don't fit.

Because I was lazy I used plywood too and it worked just fine but I also cut out gaskets for everything from 1/8" craft foam. I love this stuff for quieting little rattles. It comes in paper sized sheets with self adhesive backing, is pretty dense, and can find in walmart for $1 sheet (multiple...

wiring computer fan to cool amp

Some ideas (not tested) concerning fan placement with minimal trim cutting. Could cut a hole through the floor or wheel well. With a small fan could run some sort of ducting or tubing to a less conspicuous place on the trim - like behind the rear seat. If you do cut the trim you could find some...

    Component Tweeter placment

I did it the way Shadow did too. Although I've not listened to kick panels myself this morning's drive with 4 windows down, sunroof open, and traffic calls for tweets pointing at your head with no interference. That and more power...always more power... I too used a plywood adapter/spacer...

Quick question on HU install into a 98 Mounty w/ Mach Audio

I don't have the Mach but there are three harnesses. One 16 pin (pwer& speakers), one 20 pin (rear seat controls) and one 8 pin I think for the changer if you have one. When you replace the HU you only need the 16 pin one and the corresponding 70-1771 adapter. The other two harnesses will hang...

    Wiring 2 head units?

Ok, this worked for my home stereo and did not cost much money. I had 2 receivers that I wanted to power one pair of speakers. I needed a simple A/B switch so I used TWO dpdt rocker switch from Radioshack something like this. Basically you hook up your speakers wires to the center conductors and...

    Wiring 2 head units?

I would not think splicing speaker output wires would not be wise.Too many chances that power will back fed to one or the other head units. You need some sort of A/B switch for the audio. Check PeripheralElectronics.com or Pie.net for aux interfaces to you factory stereo. If you have outboard...

These guys at Peripheral always have the coolest stuff. Along with the steering wheel/backseat control now they have an adapter to allow up to 3 aux inputs (MP3, etc) to stock HU

Cool, sorry it was late. Check this out for rear seat controls> PAC using new head units. Never heard of anyone using it though.

    install jvc unit into a 98 x

Take a look at this thread that is running currently. It has my wiring info on my 98. I'm not clear on your 9 and 14 wire harnesses, most likely an upgrade from mine. Do you have factory subwoofer? What are the colors for these mystery wires and I'll consult my cd manual?

    98 XLT sound system SUCKS!!!

The large grey connector is the 20 pin rear seat controls. There are things available for around $100 that will allow you to use the rear seat controls but never tried it. I pretty sure the wiring is same for mounty.

Opinions on Stock Premium Audio System

Without a doubt all aftermarket is better but I if you just upgrade your speakers to good efficient ones, to make best use of limited stock power, you will get much improved sound and if you decide to junk the rest of it later you still can use your new speakers. I did what you are thinking...

    Pre-manufactured custom subwoofer enclosures...

I have the unamped 10" thunderform and its works well. Not as good as a ported 12 but still can make the review mirror shake. Although I have not ever seen one I heard talk the Q-form was not as good because it was a more flexible plastic that causes response to drop off. For the amp in the...

    Soft Cargo Bag (Rooftop)

I borrowed a friend's FORD bag a couple years ago and now have the axius one. As I recall the ford bag was heavy vinyl and mostly waterproof. It was a little bigger (sorry still no dimensions) than the axius and had 2 wide straps on the front and backwith locking plastic clips. There were no...
