Tires, Gears, effect on MPH and RPM, etc.

Edit Yes, substitute final drive ratio rather than ring and pinion and the formula's will work. ;) As yosh states in post #8, I didn't leave a provision for the gear ratio of the transmission, or state that I'm assuming your tranny is a 1:1 ratio (4th gear in a 5-spd manual). If I had...

    Firestone Destination LE

It's up to you, within reason :p ...on the road, the higher, the stiffer the ride, but slightly better mileage/load capacity...lower gives you a smoother ride, but a little less mileage/less load capacity. I would try around 32 and see what you think :smoke:

    Firestone Destination LE

Size What size did you go with? I have 31x10.5x15-(stock teardrop rims) on my 1998 XLT 5.0 AWD. I have about 1500 miles on mine...ride nice, quiet. Running 32 psi in mine.

Tires, Gears, effect on MPH and RPM, etc.

Thanks-no biggie! Thanks rino351...appreciate it...just trying to help...and inject some humor too :)

Tires, Gears, effect on MPH and RPM, etc.

I feel your pain! Wider tires will affect your gas milage..it takes more torque to turn and they cover more surface...you need more power to move more mass and/or overcome resistance (I like physics too :) ). If you need more power, you will use more fuel, all other things being equal. Taller...

Oil in my car 5w30 bad for a car with 63k

Oil-no issue for you. I use Mobil 1 5w30 synthetic oil in all my vehicles, including my Corvette. In fact, it is the required oil for the Corvette (at least the 1994). I have used synthetic for years in every vehicle I have owned since ~1990, and never had an issue. I swear by that stuff...

Tires, Gears, effect on MPH and RPM, etc.

Most of you "seasoned" folks most likely know all this, but I stumbled upon this and thought I'd pass it on for someone new, FWIW. A common 4x4 application is an upgrade to larger-than-stock tires (duh :p ). Once completed, this change immediately alters vehicle speed at a given...

    Firestone Destination LE

Firestone Destination LE's Just put a set of Firestone Destination LE's (31x10.5x15-stock teardrop rims) on my 1998 XLT 5.0 AWD. Yeah, I took a chance with Firestones, but they seem to get great reviews at tire rack, and were inexpensive. Only have about 100 miles on 'em, but so far so good...

    Tire size question-1998 XLT-AWD-V8

Thanks all...I think I am going to go with the larger size (31 x 10.5 x 15), as many sources tell me I should be fine with no lift, standard 15" teardrop rim on a 1998 XLT AWD 5 Liter ;) . Please correct me if I'm wrong, as I am ordering next week!. I do very little off-road, some snow...

    Tire size question-1998 XLT-AWD-V8

So if I go with the 30 x 9.5 x 15's, will it affect my speedometer, and by how much? 50 mph would actually be ?? mph. Thanks!

    Tire size question-1998 XLT-AWD-V8

Thanks...I do not want to lift at all...sounds like 30x9.5x15s are the trick...any particular brand...I like Michelin. TIA Vic

    Tire size question-1998 XLT-AWD-V8

Hi, Does anyone know how big of a tire I can go on a stock 1998 XLT Explorer with stock 15" rims, without a lift? Mostly all street use. It has 235/75R-15's on it now, and I need to replace them soon! TIA Vic

    1998 XLT Questions-General and Electrical

Hey, thanks for the reply(s) :) 2) As far as I can tell, there are no stickers I can see...hmmm, can't imagine Ford using a different third brake light than yours. It's real long and tapered above the rear hatch. This is an issue, as I don't think it will pass Delaware inspection without...

    1998 XLT Questions-General and Electrical

Hi All, I just purchased a 1998 XLT AWD 5.0 with 94K+ miles for my wife (she wrecked her 1992. ), and have a few general questions and a couple specific ones. I have changed the oil and oil filter (Mobil 1 Synthetic and Motocraft oil filter). Vehicle runs great. Now, my...

    Code Reader type/use

I want to start doing my own work on my 1992 XLT. What type of code reader do I want to buy? Also, what's involved in using it. Would the $47.99 one from NAPA be OK for basic use(OBD II, I think)? Thanks;)

    Rough idle-black smoke

Thanks folks....been a great help!! Still have the battery light on, but I put a voltmeter on the battery and the volts are OK (with and without a load). Checked connections, all look OK...who knows? How much is a new O2 sensor, where is it located, and do I need any special tools? I...

    Rough idle-black smoke

Problem solved!!! It was the fuel pressure regulator! Replaced it, and it runs fine. Thanks all!!!!!!!!! I did NOT replace the O2 sensor...do I have too? The only other thing I noticed is the battery light is now on...weird...volts look OK...maybe not related. Truck is running OK...

    Rough idle-black smoke

Thanks for your help...appreciate it:cool: Will check out your suggestions. No, not raw fuel, but she's REAL rich (black smoke, bad enough to leave a black mark on the driveway).

    Rough idle-black smoke

What is an fpr, how much, and where is it? Thanks for the quick replies!!!;) UPDATE: Wife says the check engine light DID come on once, but went out.

    Rough idle-black smoke

Not sure...how can I check?? It does have good power on acceleration, which would rule out a bad cat, right (or not). Thanks
