    99 vs 2001 5r55e-- any differences?

I am picking up a used tranny for my 99 Mountaineer tomorrow (4.0L 4WD). THe one that I have selected at this point is from an '01 Explorer with 75k miles on it. Are there any differences between the years that might make this anything other than a direct swap? Also, is there anything that...

Picking up a used tranny tomorrow

So I'm picking up a used 5R55E from a yard about an hour away (75k miles so I hope it'll be good). I'll be having a shop put it in, but just was wondering if there's anything I should maybe do to it while it's in hand (hehe)? Also, about how much do those things weigh? Do you think a friend...

Slow shifts out of first, flashing OD light

1999 Mtneer 4.0 SOHC 4x4. 158000 miles. A few weeks ago, it started doing a thing where it would occasionally free rev in drive unless you put it in 2nd or neutral and back in drive. At that point, I checked the transmission fluid, and it was about a quart low. I topped it off and forgot...

    Front diff pinion seal replacement

My '99 Mtneer 4.0L 4WD is dripping fairly steadily from the pinion seal on the front differential. I was thinking of taclking this myself. What's all involved with this job? Is there a how-to somewhere? I've had both driveshafts off before to replace u-joints, so removing it won't be a...

Are the fuel rails on a 97 SOHC the same as a 99?

My wife's Mountaineer has one of the mounting tabs broken off of the left side fuel rail (this happened about 3 yrs ago, and the epoxy I used to fix it let go last night). Calling around, the closest I could find was a '97 with a SOHC that I could pull a rail off of. Does anyone know if they...

Good sized coolant leak-- can't find the source

This is a 1999 Mountaineer 4x4 4.0L SOHC. I'd noticed recently a strong coolant smell, and the coolant bottle was almost empty. I filled it on Thursday, and today it's almost empty again. I just noticed a good sized spot of coolant on the ground beneath it. After looking around with a...

Please help diagnose idle and cutting out issue

Hello all, This is a 1999 Mountaineer 4WD 4.0L SOHC. It has 148000 miles on it but I don't think it's the original motor-- there's "1998-2001" written on the block with yellow paint marker. So the mileage of the motor is likely different. The problem is it idles rough and makes the vehicle...

    Star bolt size-- rear driveshaft

Hey guys/gals, Does anyone know what size the 12 pt bolts are that hold on the rear driveshaft? I'm going to pull it tonight to have new u-joints pressed in and will need to get a socket (I don't have crap for star sockets). Thanks!

    Front axle seal

I tried searching but all I get is a blank page. The driver's side axle seal on my wife's Mountaineer is leaking. I read through the thread on replacing the axles, and that looks pretty straightforward, so I think I can get the axle off. My question is what's involved with replacing the...

    Starter issues

I've done some searching but haven't found a thread with my exact issue, so here goes. I've a 1999 Mountaineer 4x4 4.0L SOHC w/ 132000 miles on it (my wife's ride). Tuesday I replaced the plugs, then yesterday I replaced the rear wheel seals and cleaned the throttle body and IAC. It runs very...

    Gauge cluster lights

There are several gauge cluster lights out in my 1999 Mountaineer. Is it possible to replace these, or does the whole cluster have to be replaced? How rough of a job is it to get the cluster out (probably a really crappy job)? I'm sure there's no way to replace bulbs w/o pulling the cluster...

    Rattle from driver's side front

Recently, my 1999 Mountaineer has developed a rattle that sounds like it's coming from the front left suspension. It's noticeable when on rough roads, but is quiet on smooth roads. It's sort of a low toned, almost clunky rattle. It doesn't seem to happen if I turn the steering wheel back...

Ball joint most likely to go

It sounds as if there's a ball joint going in the left front of my 1999 Mountaineer Auto 4x4 4.0L. The truck has 123000 miles on it (bought it with 112000) and I have no idea if any have ever been replaced. Having just spent about 600 on having ball joints done on one side of my car (VW) I...

    key pad code

My wife and I purchased a '99 Mountaineer about 8 months ago. It didn't come w/ an owners manual (of course) and I can see nowhere in the vehicle where the keypad code is located. How would I go about finding it? Thanks

    Which transmission do I have?

How do I identify if I have the 5 spd auto or 4 spd auto on a 1999 Mountaineer? Looking in the manual, it shows the same gear selector display for both the 4spd and 5spd, and when I accelerate gradually and try to listen/feel for shifts, I really can't tell if it's 4 or 5. Thanks Chris

Wierd issue when taking off at close to WOT

Hey I'm new here, and search didn't show me what I was looking for, so here goes: I just bought a 1999 Mountaineer with a 4.0L SOHC. It's high miles (113000) but has no fluids leaking, solid and quiet, suspension is sound, etc. Now that we have it, I tried taking off hard from a full...
