91 ford explorer

When its cold out my 91 explorer doesn't want to shift until it warms up then the only gear I can get it in and that's only with grinding it is reverse. Then after that I really have to push it to get it into any other gear. What is wrong?

HI guys, I have a 91 ford explorer sport that I bought here in Puerto Rico (just got stationed here) and it has a lot of play in the steering wheel, while checking I came to find out that the steering shaft is very loose right where it meets with the steering column. any idea on how to fix this...
