2014 Base Model Explorer
I bought a 2014 explorer (base model) brand new in 2014. I haven’t had any issues with it until now. It’s sitting at close to 123,000 miles. Regular oil changes.

First issue - the SUV dies when I shift it to park but starts right back up perfectly fine, every time. It doesn’t die all of the time though. It started happening sporadically two months ago but now it’s happening frequently. Every time I come to a stop to put it in park it idles under 500rpm and normally jumps back up to 700 but other times it just dies. A couple months ago the “low engine oil pressure” light came on. I took it into ford and they said it was just the sensor and said there was oil leaking from the shocks in the back - replaced all of those. They also said the catalytic converter was bad - I chose not to have them fix that issue yet. But it’s starting to die on me again and the low engine oil pressure light has came on once but turned right back off.

Second issue is there is a loud grinding noise when I accelerate. It makes the sound between 800rpms - 2000rpms then it stops. Ford said that grinding is the catalytic converter.

Any ideas of what the issues could be? Should I attempt fixing it or just trade her in?

I’d get it diagnosed at a place other than a Ford dealer. Dealer mechanics are hit and miss (mostly miss) and often just throw parts at an issue.

Have you ever replaced the spark plugs?

Yes, I replaced all six of them about a month ago, cleaned the throttle as it was really dirty & put her back together.
