I'll be honest. I don't know much about suspension. Some one told me to change out my 2000 leafs for a 4 dr leaf set. What benifits would come from doing that? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Your truck should have a mono leaf (only 1 leaf) in the rear. By swapping to 4 door leaves (which have 3-4 leaves in the pack) you'll stop any rear end sag you might be experiencing, and you'll increase your towing/hauling stability. Also, by using 4 door leaves, you can use a regular add-a-leaf later on if you want more lift.

I have 4 door leaves on my '99 Sport and love it

HokieBert, Thanks for the quick response.

I just got my X a few months ago, bought it used. I have not had to do any work on my cars because is always bought new with warranty. With this X I am finally having fun getting to work on it myself and learning how to do these things. Is changing out the leafs easy and about how much would some one spend to do it?:)

Didnt they start putting leaf packs in the sports not to long ago?? I heard that somewhere, can someone confirm this for me.

so since i have 3 leafs on my 94 XLT does that mean i can get add-a-leafs, and i heard they increase the wear on the leaf springs?

Geez Brandons your so stoopid!!! Yes you can get AAL for your Explorer, I havent heard about them wearing out your leaves though.

parents friend told me they use to use add-a-leaf things on thier springs, and since there made with carbon, eventually they loose the spring, and the add-a-leaf does that, but the type he was talkingabout only goes onthe one end of the leafs, do the ones for explorers center at the axle, so theres equal lengths from each end?

Brandons, what in sam hill are you talkin' about? You stupid or sumpthin? My AAL is just another spring but shorter and thicker than the others. No adverse wear, its just like, you know, Adding A Leaf. ;)

im just a confused child :D. i want AAL how much did yours cost?

Depends on how much you pay for the leaf packs. Check with local junk yards and see if you can get some low mileage leaf packs from a 4 door X. You'll probably pay in the neighborhood of $70-150 depending on the condition and age of the springs. Also, you can buy em knew, but I really doubt there's that much of a difference between new springs and springs with 20k miles on them.

As for putting them in. All you need are;

-large combination wrenches
-deep well sockets (1/2" ratchet helps too)
-PB Blaster or equivalent penetrating oil
-a breaker bar if the u-bolt nuts are being stubborn
-a jack or 2
-jack stands and maybe some blocks of wood
-a buddy to help you wrench
-beer (as payment to afforementioned buddy)
-elbow grease and sweat

oh, and for extra credit, profanity sometimes helps getting the bolts loose ;)

My '03 Sport has 4 leafs. No idea when they changed from the single-leaf design.

HokieBert, Thanks again. Hopefully I'll be able to do this in a month after i close on my house. I let every one know how much better it gets.
