I have a 98 Ranger 4x4 that has an 01 Ex 5.0 and 4R70W installed. I purchased it with a 97 ECU in it (they didn't know about PATS so tried different ECU's until they found one that started the truck). The PO stated it had issues with the trans, wouldn't engage sometimes, then it would. I suspected it was related to using the 97 ECU. When I went to look at/purchase it, I noticed empty D/MIII containers, so I suspect that is what he was running in it. PO also stated the trans was rebuilt and 'upgraded', but was still using the original TC (when the AA kit to use RBV t-case), though I do not know what was done. Most likely just a shift kit, as there doesn't seem to be a great deal up 'upgrades' for an 01.
I wired in the PATS and installed an 01 ECU from my wrecked Ex. Got it running and driving without much issue. Reverse and 1st engage just fine and feel solid. No noticeable lag or hesitation. 1-2 shift is a little high, but feels ok, though it doesn't break the tires loose easily when manually shifted in 2nd/holding the brake on gravel. It moves, but feels like it is slipping a little bit. 2-3 shift seems long and it feels like 3rd is slipping. With OD off and accelerating, RPMs go up, but I don't feel much acceleration. 3-4 is really soft and also feels like it is slipping. If OD is off, and then it is turned on, RPMs go up for a second or two, then slowly slides into gear. I am not sure if the TC is locking or not.
On my initial test drive, I got the flashing OD light. Checked codes and it was for TCC. Also get OBDII test not complete, and that it needs more run time. I have put approx 60 miles on it during testing. Light has not come back on.
Today I changed the filter and flushed the fluid. It wasn't burnt or overly dirty, but I did notice metallic flecks in it. Filter was clean and there wasn't an unusual amount of material on the magnet or in the pan. I filled it up and took it for a drive, but there were no changes. I replaced the shifter position sensor and adjusted the linkage, just in case, but that didn't change anything either. I have been reading up to figure out the inner workings of the 4R70W and try to determine where an issue might be.
I am headed out soon and try the manual 2nd engagement at speed and see if there is compression braking or not, to determine if the OD band is ok.
What are some possible solutions that I can try without removing the transmission? If she is toasted, I will either swap tailshafts with my trans (I need to read Glacier991's diary again and see if I can without special tools), or just install mine with a NP 208 or 205 and figure out drive shafts.
Thanks everyone!
