01 expl-sport loud knocking in rear over bumps

Follow Up...
Included is a documented write up on how to change the Rear Body Mount Upper/Lower Bushings, based on Skryllas instructions, with some extra details from my experience. (thanks skrylla)

Needed Items:
replacement parts
basic tools (wrenches, socket set)
wd40
2 jacks
wood (1 long 2x4,r andom thin pieces)
multiple blocks
Sawz All (I rented mine $25 for the day)
2 blades for cutting metal

Pre-soak the bolts in wd4
My buddy and I first started by pulling back the interior carpet in the rear. Just pop off the center plastic trim.
The mount bolts take some strength to remove but came out clean. We slightly jacked up the body from the ground, to get some room to work. We then started to bust apart the stock mounts. After an hour of trying and no luck, we decided to rent a sawz all and just lop off the under sides. We highly suggest this as it will save you lots of time trying to separate the stock upper/lower mounts.

When we finished cutting the bottom portions of the mounts we lowered the jacks to reposition them and separate the body from the frame to insert the new mounts. To do that, we put a 2x4 across the leaf springs with cement blocks on the ground under it for support. Shimmy small pieces of wood in between the 2x4 and leaf springs to keep the 2x4 balanced/level on the springs. We didnt hear any weird sounds other than the wood cracking when raising the body, but we kept building up support blocks under the 2x4 just in case. Once we got enough room, we removed the old upper mounts and put in the new ones. Add the lower mounts and tightened the bolts in slightly. Just enough to keep it together so when you lower the jack's, the body can settle back into place some. We then finished tightening the bolts.

These are the old parts that I removed. The corroded one just fell apart when we raised the body slightly.


Hope this helps any others who want to get this fixed or do it yourself. Definitely allow yourself at least 3 hours. It took us 4 hrs. We then decided to do the front shocks since we were in repair mode... :-)

I've checked there before, but never saw any mounts for Explorers listed. This is the first I've seen a kit anywhere. I still need to call and verify what is included in this kit. Looks like it would have all the bushings, but no hardware. I also don't know what other vehicles it would fit besides the '01 Sport.
 






Nice write-up, its now on my to-do list. But a word of advice, never get underneath your truck when its only held up by the jack they give you. It definitely is not a reliable piece of equipment

I agree with Steventadams, its not the best/safest way to accomplish this, but its what some of us can afford and the only way to accomplish it due to resources. I don't think its as dangerous since its just the body being lifted up and not the whole car, but it definitely could have a bad outcome when sticking your hand in there to replace the bushings if its not supported properly. I'm glad to hear its helped some of you better understand whats wrong and helped give you a visual on how I went about fixing it. If someone fixed this issue by going a different route, please post it.

Hey Fritz.... are those Ford EOM ones you show in the pic Polypropylene or are they that foam stuff again that was originally on there? Also, you wouldn't happen to have the part number for the rear passenger side pieces would you?? Wasn't sure which location the ones in the pic were being installed to. Looked like Driver's side, maybe second from rear??
 






I installed the rear upper and rear lower bushings (parts are the same for passenger side and driver side, only differ for rear upper and rear lower). Unfortunately I couldn't find them on any sites or from parts manufacturers that made similar bushings. I had to get the standard ford parts from the dealer. The dealer has a nice chart that illustrates the part numbers in regards to locations.

the 2 part #'s are:

1L5Z-1000155-CA
1L5Z-1000154-CA

They're posted in the pics above. Skrylla had also posted the part #'s that are referred to by Autozone and such...

Crappit... I'm confused. Guess I'll just make a trip to the Ford Stealership. I got back up under there and my rear one (the one that is left) has a number of 1000193 on it and not the 154/155. The ones by where the jack handle is stored is the 154/155 set I think. But my very back ones where the plastic sill plate snaps off look like 193 on the bottom part.

ah crap

well this sucks, I just went to my neighbor's auto shop, and he had one of his employees lift the truck and check out the bushings... Well unfortunately (and I saw for myself) EVERY body mount bushing from front to back is just GONE. all of them! anyway I have been quoted $1500 for a full replacement from a different local auto shop, and I am sure it will be pretty close in price. Just lettin' everyone know.....

Hey all, My neighbor & auto guy gave me an estimate the other day for a full body mount bushing replacement, and for parts + labor he is only gonna charge me $660!! I am looking forward to next week when he gets the parts!
 






what's thhe easiet way 2 get them apart the bushings. do I pry the bottom bushing apart from the frame and the sleece how do iget that out. I took the bolts out of the e rear bushings got new ones coming today.
 






rear mounts

ok it was very easy no need to sawzall. just use a breaker bar to remove the stiff bolt. then put the bolt back in and spin few times and hit it hard till lower bushings fall out. I don't understand why anyone would sazall that would b a pia..today I need to jack it up ill try like the pic on here cause I was having no luck a diff way ....I went to ford 45.oo for a set iof upp n lower with bolt n sleeve..I bought 2 rear mounts. hope this fixes the noise
 






fixed it..no more noise 20 min job with right tiools. replaced both rear mounts.. I used a clamp wedge the kind wth sa pump to separate body and frame from vol fire dept borrowed..5 pump each side.5 min each and 5 min for bolts to removed and lower. don't sawzall hit with hammer head of bolt....very easy I had a door latch problem too that kept locking I got a bypass fix to I'm goin post 10 min fix for the door locking..just get some bail wire bout foot long remove panel.. make a hoop at end size of qaurter. theres a yellow block from a rod that goes to the tumbler.stick the hoop under the blockaround the rod. put tension on it in the up position.tie other endgo around window channel and tie in the door holestheres 2 holes on the upper door frame size of half dollars...easy doors will function properly. usely theres a spring that breaks n the latch.

rear body bushings the easy way

i just did my bushings in less than an hour heres what i did
removed the rear bumper and the plastic shield removed the interior trim that covers the rear bushing bolts now i tried to loosen the bolts but my bushings were so far gone they just spun i got a 4 ton hydraulic porta power from harbor freight and used the spreader attatchment to lift the body and sawzalled right throught the bushings (well what was left of them lol) lifted the body a lil more put in new bushings tightened the bolts and reinstalled trim and rear bumper piece of cake i love my explorer again i have pics if anyone would ike to see i will email them

I need to do mine still...all of them. I have a feeling a sawz-all will be needed for these too. It'll be a summer project, I think.
 






Part Numbers

After experiencing the same rattling noise and then touching the back lower insulators, only to see them disintegrate... here's what I'm looking at in the Ford Workshop Manual and it shows the part numbers as the xxx192 & xxx193.

onthefritz: were those xxx155 & xxx154 parts #s from the dealership an updated part # (maybe a rubber version and not the original foam style one) ? Did you just purchase the bolt and spacer/washer separately from the dealership too?

Are the bolts, spacer/washer, upper & lower insulators available in a package together from any other supplier?
 






So that's what that noise is... Nobody could figure it out... This is an excellent thread! We need this done to the 01 pronto... that noise is jarring, and embarrassing too. Big thank yous to all!!
 






same issue on my 2001 Explorer Sport

Great posting ... thanks for solving this mystery.

I just bought my Explorer and the loud noise when hitting bumps had me worried that the bearings were shot. When driving you would swear the noise was the hatch rattling or possibly a loose interior part rattling on bumps. But it is definitely metal on metal so I kept searching beneath the car.

I ended up replacing the rear shocks to no avail. I will call the dealer Monday as the auto shops don't seem to carry the part.

My bushings on the frame to body connections are all in bad shape except the front ones. The noise seems to come from the right rear bushing, but the left rear bushing is close behind. When I turn the bolt inside the cab for the right rear, it just turns down below as well. Do I need to put a wrench on a bolt underneath the frame ? Details on this would be great skyrella.:thumbsup:

Removal of old insulators

I just did mine yesterday. I picked off the remnants of the disintegrated rubber bushings and then tightened a pair of vise grips to the bottom metal piece. Next I used an 18mm socket on a breaker bar to loosen the bolt. It took a couple of tries but it worked great. Once the bolt was cracked I sprayed some WD-40 to help the process along. After that I followed the picture tutorial shown prior with 2x4s and cement blocks for the replacement. (scrylla's tutorial... thanks btw)
