Hey Explorer Guys,

Picked up my 2001 Explorer Sport and I'm already a little bit disappointed with the subwoofer. I have the pioneer audiophile package with the 6-disc changer. I'm not complaining about the sound, but the bass just isn't quite what I want.

I read an earlier post that said the Sub was "sealed" or something, so does that mean it cannot be swapped out for a new one?

If i want to add a stand-alone sub, then do i need a new head unit, or can I add a sub (and maybe new speakers later) with the head unit I have? I'm not looking for totaly infinite quality (I have enough other hobbies), but I want to be happy with my sound.

Sealed means it in an casing that's airtight, actually i personally don't like these, because you only use half of the speaker cone.

Whereas an ported or " OPEN AIR" (wich doesn't need an box, unless oyu got an sedan or an uhm....4X4, then the room is too big)

Ported boxes have an outlet pipe, variable or not, some of them just have an hole, an common term for these you hear sometimes is Bass-Reflex, it uses a bit more then just half the cone since it will let the presure escpae out of the box wich produces and soundlevel too.

Open air speakers are really stiff on the suspension and thus they will not max out that easy when alot of DB's is put thru them, whereas sealed ones are alot looser and bottom out when you use them as open-air.

I don't know what yours got in it standart but i think it's an 10" ?...if so , try to get it out and exchange it with an competion speaker, these will give more bass ,and are definatly more clearer when the volume goes up.

an imortant thing to look at is the V-MAX factor when you look at woofers, my Earthquakes got an V-max of 17mm wich means that from bottom to top it will come out 34mm at the max, cheap speakers don't often have more then like 8-9MM V-max wich produces ALOT less sound pressure.

If you got an 10" there are now some manufactures that make 10" in an fat boy design wich means the suspension foam is about twice as wide as an regular suspension and these will also give you more pressure since they also have more travel in the cone.

hope this helps you any...
