01' explorer
man, i know this thing aint the fastest around but my buddies BONE STOCK 01' jimmy 2door WALKED MY EXPLORER BY A MILE!!!

either way we tried, "shifting" it or just givin the pedal to medal.

one thing i did notice is the X halls ass at around 40mph and up.its dead from a standstill.i have a fully loaded 01' sport. 3;73 rear end limtd slip.

i was thinkin about putting the superchip and an intake on.. is it worth the $500 or so??

given this is NOT my everyday car. i have a work car. this is just for weekends ect. but it is a lease, so thats why im not into doin exhaust ect. i just want to keep it simple bolt on/take off/sell later kinda deal....

with the super chip can you just "take it off" and return to reg. driving mode?

that VOLANT intake looks like the ****.. do they make for an 01"??

Just get a KKM intake for $90 and a new exhaust. I think that the superchip is a waste of money. Thats just my opinion.

What size tires do you have? If you have the 255 70R16 tires, then that is part of your problem. Those tires used to come only with a 4.10 which helps your acceleration off the line. Out of my Borla, K&N FIPK and Superchip, the Superchip is the one I feel most. It also helps the 5-speed automatics shifting. It shifts to the proper gear as soon as you floor it. It shifts a little harder as well.

Joe - how can u say that?!?!?!

Chips are one of the best ways to gain power.... I put a Diablo Chip on my explorer, and it changed the way the car drives. I would defintely recommend a chip, do a search for them on the message boards.... pretty much everyone who has one will tell u how worth it they are.... and u can take them off easily when your lease is up.
Outta curiosity.. Joe- WHy do you think they are a waste?

ok, cool.

ROBERT, yes i do have the 16" rims/ perf. package or whatever...

for a fact it is 3.73 ltd.slip differantial.

i dont want to get into exhaust really...

FOR SURE an intake, i noticed my buds jimmy got A LOT more response/rev faster....

ill prob. do the chip also..

out of curiosity has anyone of you guys that put the chip in noticed any BAD THINGS. such as gas mileage ect. because the "superchip" one requires PREMIUM gas, which pretty much means the fuel curves on the e.f.i got to be maxed out to have to run prem. fuel..

Scratch the waste part. I think they are not worth the money. Quite a few people complained of problems they were having when they put the chips in. Its just my opinion. When it comes to an explorer and messing with the computer I just dont think its a good idea. Later

i would definately recommend it, but if you get one, do a search - youre gonna have to reset the computer and theres some other tips floating arouund the forums.

as for mileage, i havent really noticed a difference.

Chip's Good

Well I just say that I have the chip and would highly recommend it. You do have to run premium fuel but your gas mileage should increase, as well as your horsies.... always a good thing. Talk 2 people on the boards who actually have a chip installed, they are your best resources for info on the chip. You have to ignore the occasional problems people have, you can except that with any form of kit.

crod2000 -- Unfortunately Ford started including the 3.73 with the 16" tires a year or two ago. I think they also dropped the 4.10 alltogether now. My '97 came with the 16" tires and 4.10 LS. Much more responsive off the line. The SOHC is somewhat sluggish off the line, a little more so with my 32" tires. On the '97 it has a Variable Intake System that opens up a second air port through the intake manifold. It opens at 3000 RPM. You can easily feel when it opens up. It is similar to driving a turbocharged car after the boost spools up. Until mine opens up, it is somewhat weak. It opens up around 40 MPH. Ford dropped that in '98. I don't know if the manifold has both air paths open all the time now or if Ford closed one of the paths off completely. I know the '98s do not have the VIS. I tried zip-tying my VIS arm open once but couldn't say that I felt any difference off the line though.

I rented a Jimmy when I was in Detroit last March. It seemed pretty responsive off the line, but when it came to passing it felt very weak. It had no passing power at all. I have never driven an SOHC Explorer with the 16" tires and a 3.73 so I don't know how bad it is off the line. I do know that when I went from my stock 30" tires to my 32" tires, I felt a little performance loss. My current ratio is the equivalent to having 235 75R15 tires and a 3.73. Your tires are a bit taller than the 235 is so yours would be a bit more sluggish. I have been told the reason Ford dropped the 4.10 was due to emissions. Your engine turning at a lower RPM than mine would polute less.

robert, ya THIS THING IS A DOG. the only way i can explain it is like this. prob. a computer "detuner" on it.

off the line or at about 30mph or less in overdrive or drive. if you punch it. IT WILL NOT GO INTO PASSING GEAR. you know what i mean, just go faster but, it wont "shoot the revs sky high and take off". like most other cars i.e. my friends jimmy.

the only time i can get it to "shoot the revs" is around 45mph and up...

i sware off the line my brothers 4 banger stick ranger will hang with this thing.(prob. beat it!)

i should be able to see a big differance if i do the intake and chip at the same time.

a little bit of my background. i was into crotch rockets for about 3yrs. i just sold a 2000 suzuki 1300 hayabusa..(worlds record holder/fastest ect.)

i had about $8,000 sunk into a $12,000 bike. INCLUDING fuel injection reprogramming/dyno tuning.. so thats why im asking so much about the super chip. i pretty much understand how they get this perf. just wondering on how "reliable it is"..

i changed out my stock gears on my 94 xlt which were 3:73 to a 4:10 gear. This made a huge difference! It is much more responsive off the line and gave me a quicker start off the line. Like countless others i have also thought about getting a chip. But after some of the horrorific stories ive heard about them im a little hesitent about them ,but on the other hand ive heard MANY people having good luck with performance gains by using them. so ill probablly end up with one down the line but not until i do some more research. But if all you want are better starts a higher gear ratio is probly the way to go.

crod2000 -- that is your problem, coming from a crotch rocket, you will be hard-pressed to find any car that feels quick :) The Superchip will help you the most. When I floor it with my Superchip in, it downshifts to whichever gear puts me at about 4000 RPM. It stays in gear up to 6500 RPM, then upshifts where it starts out at about 5000 RPM. With my Superchip temporarily out right now, it doesn't alway shift into a low enough gear when at full throttle. Sometimes the speed will slowly build up while in 3rd from about 3000 RPM, other times it will shift into 3rd, and then about 1/2 a second later downshift into 2nd. By then the opportunity for a safe pass has usually passed. With my Superchip, it goes staight to 2nd and takes off.

OK ROBERT!! :) yeah, your right, my buddies 700hp rwhp, blown mustang does feel slow... HONESTLY!!

im for sure going to get the chip, then, ya mine WILL NOT ever down shift or anything.also, it only has 1000 miles on it! no im not ragin the piss out of it either, ive only floored it enough times to see how slow it is..ahah

my friend with an f-150 said the transmission has to "learn" itself?? that after a few thousand miles it shifted/ran a lot better.....

so what is involved in install? find the box, take out old put in new??

well, more or less, yeah. disconnect battery and make sure its disconnected for at least 30 min. find the ecu (computer.) theres a dummy plug in the back - take that out. use the scuff pad that comes with the chip to remove the "rubber" coating on the computer board. plug in chip. start engine and let idle for 5 min (dont rev the engine during this time.)...at least, thats how to install on years surrounding 98; i cant imagine that yours would be much different. the whole install takes about 45 min (only cuz the computer needs to be reset, thats why you must leave it disconnected for at least 30 min or more.)

oh i forgot to mention that you can actually install the chip while youre waiting the 30 min or so - you dont have to wait 30 min then do everything (you probably knew this, but i didnt want to leave anything out - superchips instructions are pretty good too.)
