01 xlt - 4wd auto mode feels jerky

Yep, that's normal. The auto mode applies power to the front as it senses the back slipping. The original auto system was designed by Bosch, and is quite smooth because it ramped the power to the front up smoothly, but Ford decided to save some $$ and cut corners on the system, so it's a little jerky since it only applies power in discrete steps.
