02 explorer xlt
Hi guys. New to the thread but i thought I'd share my experience with my 02 explorer 4.0! I bought it a couple days ago noticing that it took a while for it to turn over, like 10 seconds. Usually did it for 5 secs, turned the key off, cranked it again then it usually started up...I saw that it was a common problem in the third gens. So I did the usual plugs, wires, cleaned egr, cleaned maf, the iac, replaced intake manifold gaskets etc. Then I noticed the pcv valve on the back of the motor when I was digging around. Took off the vacuum hose the the valve, and the other end going up to the intake manifold. Un twisted the pcv valve, noticed how dirty it was so I cleaned it with brake cleaner. Re installed and fired right up!! Has been all day, so if your still getting a slow crank, check the pcv valve, and the vacuum line itself!....I should mention also that the ground wire going from the passenger firewall to the block inbetween the 1 and 2 spark plug was filthy on the engine side. Un bolt, shoot it with carb cleaner, and wire brush...bolt get back in, I did this right after the pcv so it may have helped..maybe not but something to try!! Hope this helps mannny people with the same symptoms

If the PCV valve was stuck open it would have caused a vacuum leak which could make for a hard start.

Good tip.:chug:
