I need to replace the fuel filter on my 02 4.6 X. I have the replacement filter but when I tried to remove the old filter from the fuel lines, I could not get the fittings off. A local shop wants to charge me $80.00 to replace it, does anybody know what tool can take this fitting off? and where to get it?

Come on guys, somebody has to know something about this. I want to get it done before I go on a four hour trip this weekend. Especially with Cali gas prices, I need to save as much as possible.

You should be able to go to the auto parts store buy a fuel filter disconnect kit. It will consist of 6-8 different size round plastic tools. The fuel filter is secured by a spring like o-ring. You use the proper size tool and push it against where the lines connect and it will stretch out the spring and allow you to undo the lines.

Here is an idea of what they look like-

You should be able to do this yourself and it is not hard at all. Takes very little time after you figure out how it works. Hope this helps a little bit. Have fun!

14 years ago, I hope they figured it out by now.

The Lisle plastic disconnect set works on every Gen3 I have worked on. Have to push using pliers, works every time.

Forogt to mention, I had an early 02 come in that had regular clips the are u shaped that you pry off and pull line. That had 3 ports.

The later builds had one inlet one outlet and a red clip that unfolds and hinges on one side and then slides out. Then you can disconnect with tool. Be careful, the red clips are finicky and not easy to find seperately.
