please someone help me. im getting mixed answers everywhere on if the 02 mountaineer 4.0 awd and the 02 explorer xlt 4.0 4wd have the same transmission? ive used a couple transmission lookups and they say my explorer has a 5r55w but the mountaineer has the 5r55e

the reason im asking is my explorers transmission is shot and i have a chance to buy a mountaineer with a solid trans in it for dirt cheap i just dont know if its the same transmission? i need my explorer back on the road
some places are saying the 5r55w was for v8's so i have no clue anymore

There was only two options for 3rd Gens w/AT trans. 5r55w and 5r55s. I can't tell you for sure it will work being they have different transfer cases but it should.

The W and the S are identical in every way, except for gear ratios within. The hydraulics, electronics, mounting, compatability, are alike. The problem of substituting a W for an S is one of computer compatibility. An S computer will detect a W transmission as having incorrect gear ratios, thereby thinking something in the trans is slipping or has failed.

To my knowledge, which is admittedly limited, the "E" trans was not used in Gen 3. imp

Thank you guys, I'm hoping it's the same, only loss of 150 bucks if it isn't just hoping for the best, i want my baby back on the road

It sounds like your buying the entire mountaineer from your first post? If so you will have the computer stuff needed if it's an S. Worst case you get one at a junkyard if your only buying trans. You do know it has a part number on it that will allow you to confirm it's a 5r55w or s. Also I believe the w had a fill port on side of trans and the s does not

I am replacing my transmission in an 04 Mounty right now. let me give you the run down.

@Tylers02 is correct. there were two types of transmissions for the 3rd gen, the 55R5W & 55R5S. The 'W" was used until the cutoff date 5/2002 when they switched to the "S". So put both Vins in etis-ford.com (i think) and see if they are both listed with either the S or the W. there is also "trans code" on the door sticker. right now it escapes me but i believe the V code is for the S transmission. Z (maybe) for the W.

No, you cannot use a W where an S is. I have had the unfortunate opportunity to find out first hand as the previous owners mechanic put in a W in my 04 mounty. only when the PCM had a chance to figure out the pressure and gear ratio were off, it started acting like the Pressure Module was messed up.

I am now in the process of replacing it with an S from a very good donor car, and its not a fun job. you can use an S from any donor car withing the same generation. it comes down to gear ratios and the PCM.

this is where I asked the same question recently.

there is an explanation by a poster in the thread that explains it pretty good.
hope this helps

@Tylers02
My 2004 "S" definitely has the fill plug, R.H. side, rear, above pan flange. imp

also, 1L2P is the "W" 2L2P is the "S" There should be a cardboard tag on the transmission if it fell off then its stamped on the EPC

Imp I will have to check my 04. I don't remember seeing one and I know on the parts diagram for the W it shows one and I thought the S did not.
