2002 Explorer Sport
I bought this 2002 Sport, 5 speed manual thinking it would be an easy fixer upper, boy was I wrong. After the first trip to the emmissions test site I discovered how little i knew about this vehicle. I discovered the CEL light and several other cluster lights were burned out. The vehicle had a total of nine codes still in the memory.- I knew it was time to get serious about this truck. I replaced all of the lights in the instrument cluster and then cleared all of the codes to see what I was actually left with. P0175 was the culpert. the engine ran fine after starting but it just did not seem to start as easy as I thought it should. It had a little stubborness about kicking in after 4 or 5 cranks. After fumbling through the causes of P0175 Codes and numerous advice forums and columns I have changed the MAF sensor which did not change any performance issues. I took it to one of the local stealerships here in Nashville and had them update the PCM - No big difference there either. I had checked all vacuum lines-no problems there. I decided to pull the plugs and found that they were not gapped properly- most were at .044 ( out of the box gauge) I gapped the MotorCraft plugs at .054, put new wires on and fired it up....started right up. I thought it was over but NOOOO, it did last long enough to get me through the emmissions test and get my new truck titled to me but the day after passing the CEL came back on. I was perplexed. I decided instead of jumping in and replacing parts it would be best to take it back to the stealership for a diagnostic run and it seemed as though the hard to start problem had returned too. the technician spent 2 hours testing and found out the fuel injectors had been changed out with the wrong ones. My engine is a regular gas and someone had put flex-fuel injectors in there. the difference was flex-fuel injectors operate at .24 psi and the gas injectors that i should have operate at .19 psi. this is why it was running rich and giving me the P0175 error code.....At least I hope- I plan on changing them out next week. Has anyone ever heard of this? Is is rough changing out the injectors, I plan on doing this myself so any expertise would be appreciated.
