Im looking to upgrade the stereo in my 02xlt. Im looking for a place that would sell the factory sub and amp so i can keep it hidden. any ideas where i should be looking?

I'm not understanding the question, it's the second sentence that's confusing... Help me out.

I just found mine on fleabay for $20 shipping was more than the part. It had Subwoofer and amp. What are you going to do about the panel, Radio etc.

I was under the assumption that i could just hook it into the factory radio harness in my truck, is this not the case?

Depends if your truck had a sub to begin with or not. Having dug behind the dash on my '04 NO plug for the subwoofer behind the radio. There has to be 3 connectors in back of the radio to plug in a subwoofer. The sub connector is only 3 wires Enable, Sub+, Sub-.

I have not pulled the RR back panel to see if that connector is there. In '04 its connector
an 8 pin with 5 wires, Batt, Grnd, Enable, Sub+, Sub-

What I had planned on doing all along is grabbing some junkyard harness and cut the ends off so they are like ‘pig tails’ and just run my own wires from the radio to the sub.

Still trying to work out the replacement radio that will drive the sub and its been too cold to work outside.

In what location are they hidden now? Couldn't that location be used? My amps are hidden, but not sub - that would be nice.

Nice Try

On the 98-2002 X's the stereo only comes with the correct ammount of outs for the stock system. If your xlt did not have the sub option added to it then it does not have the place to plug the wiring harness into the back of the headunit.

If you just want to add base to your system you can go a 2 different ways:
{I am assuming you don't want a big box in the back that is why you are looking at the stock amp and sub to fit in the rear cubby}

1.Keep your exisiting headunit and install an Thunderform cutom enclosure (google it) that will fit in your right rear cubby. These come with either a regular speaker wire input or RCA inputs. Then splice speaker wire from one of your speakers to the sub. {This is by far the crude method} {another cation with this besides the sound quality of stock speakers being horrible is that you may blow your stock speaker, because you will probaly be inclined to turn up the bass to test your new sub and that will definately blow the stock speakers because they are connected to the same output}

2. Still install the Thunderform enclosure ( There are a few other brands out there also) But this time also buy a new head unit and make sure you buy on that has Sub outputs. These will be RCA so it is just a plug and play from there.

thunderforms are not made for 02-05 explorers, however, jl audio stealthboxes are. or you can just build your own!

Those stealth boxes are nice, but what if you have rear air?

Nice boxes, but I have rear air. On the right side it now has a cubby hole where the sub would go no room for a box either. Panels are very similar between sub and non-sub. There are many choices for a stock radio upgrades (seems a lot of people go the aftermarket route) and many have the extra plug just need to add wiring between the radio and sub. I'm not looking for loud just balanced.
