I've been searching around the site now for about 45 min trying to find an answer, but no luck. Here's whats going on. Yesterday I was driving around Pittsburgh, mostly highway, everything was fine. I pulled in to a big mall/shopping area to look for somewhere to get dinner. After about five minutes of this "stop and go" driving I noticed the tranny started to slip between 1-2 and 2-3. If I took of from a stop aggressivly it would not do it. I parked the vehicle and ate dinner allowing it to cool down. After dinner it drove fine all the say home.
I have noticed the slipping before when driving around town, but not as bad as it was last night. Is this the bands in the tranny? Will the whole thing have to be rebuilt?

First off, how many miles on this tranny, and what kind of use has it seen (towing, etc?). That info always helps.

In any event, my guess is that a fluid and filter change along with a band adjustment and replacing the solenoid block will likely cure this. It sounds pressure related.

Ditto, if it's now just minor, be very easy with it until you do some things to it. You can likely get it to work great again, and make it last a normal long time.

Don't push it when it is slipping, that can wear it out very quickly. Give it gas like you want to when it isn't slipping. When you have the felling that it is slipping, let off the gas, allow it to pick another gear, then apply the gas again. Good luck,

Good advice Don.

Maybe also switch it out of overdrive till you get it worked on. Second is a made up gear that also uses the overdrive band. Take a moment to reflect on any strange happenings at high speed when overdrive engages.

I just took it to the most trusted tranny shop in my area. he told me that it sounds like the converter is going out and it will need to be overhauled because of something internally. he told me on those trannys they have to bore them out and sleeve them. He said I could drive it a few more weeks since it will need rebuilt anyway. $1200 was how much he told me. And yea, I have been turning the overdrive off, it does seem to help.
