02 Ranger auto 3.0 misses under hard acceleration

Shower down on the gas, tranny kicks down then motor misses out violently. Runs ok as long as you stay out of the gas pedal. Only when you need the acceleration does it start missing real bad. Hard to tell if it is engine or tranny. Any ideas?

update

It wasn't throwing codes, no cel came on. but was cutting out at 4K rpms when hitting the accelerator. changed the fuel filter, no help. changed plugs and wires today and now its worse. runs bad, cel light on and now autozone says the codes say misfire on 1,3,5 cylinders. checked wires dozen times its correct. checked to make sure i got the correct plugs and they say i do.

First off did you use OEM plugs and wires? What color were the plugs in the offending cylds.? Second did you test the fuel pressure with a guage at all rpm levels?
