Hi, I just found out about this site and need a bit of info please. I'm on the verge of getting a 2002 Explorer XLT with the 4.0 sohc V6, 109k on it. I'll probably be picking it up tomorrow. Private party trade of vehicles. Carfax was clean, but that may not include any major repair work done, so I'm told. I'm aware of all the tranny problems on this particular model, but what I'm wondering is, is there a specific model or engine or tranny, that is worse than another? The previous owner only had the vehicle for approx 1 year, and bought it from a dealer. This Explorer was made in Canada. It's in great shape, runs drives, shifts fine. No issues at all. First thing I'm doing, is taking it directly to Kennedy Transmission and having it serviced. Fluids, filter, etc. Front and rear etc. Everything. Where on the vehicle is the transmission model number? How bad are the trannies on these things, really? Should I be running from this deal? Thanks.
