Hey peoples I am new here. I have an 03 explorer with the 4.6, 5R55S transmission and AWD. I was told by a transmission shop the the trans was an "S" and not the "E" as what I first thought. I needed the typical torque convertor. Can someone shed some light on this for me as to what transmission is in this explorer.
The problem I had been having with this thing is the O/D light was flashing and when the Modis was hooked up it displyed the 741 code that pointed to the TCC system. Back in April I went to Ford and bought the solenoid pack for it, installed it and still had the TCC code. I determined that the original solenoid pack was good so I held onto it. A couple of weeks ago the wife was driving to work and the transmission would high rev the engine and not shift out of 2nd to 3rd for her. When I drove it, I could get it to shift by backing the gas pedal off. Then it would shift ok, but wasn't like it was. This was showing the 745 code, Transmission Fluid Control Solenoid. I replaced the torque convertor as it had the sound of rocks when it started up and I knew the TCC system was showing a slip when the Modis was hooked up. Torque convertor done and the original solenoid pack reinstalled. Still have the 745 code and still doesn't shift worth a crap. Note also that when the pan was dropped the magnet had the typical junk stuck to it and nothing major as to internal transmission parts failure. Can someone point me in the right direction as I need my 94 Explorer back from the wife.

If your '03 is like my '04 then yes it is the 'S' as its my understanding that they came with the AWD's. Yours seems like my '04 which i just had rebuilt. No third gear, flashing o/d light, Check Transmission, Code P0???.
What had happen the Snap ring on the planatery broke which ground out the drum.
Only 50k on mine. Made a whizzing sound on the 2-3 shift for a couple of weeks.

Thanks for the reply. Mine has no noise and still has third. It is something electrical. Does anyone know what the sensors are on top of the transmission?
