I've been noticing as of late a strong eggish smell when i have a more spirited drive . I know that normally means cats are going , but is there a way for me to test them rather then bringing it into a shop and having them tell me the answer while charging me ?

I'd wait until the engine throws a code for CAT INEFFICIENCY, if it's just a rotten egg smell and doesn't seem to lose power it might be just a temporary hiccup.

Could it be bad gas ?

it's possible but the main reason why you have that rotten egg smell is that your cats are being flooded with unburn fuel. So why are you having unburn fuel? needs a tune-up (spark plugs, coils) ? primary oxygen sensors not functioning well? is there a misfire that doesn't trigger a code yet (pending maybe) ?

replacing the cats is not the solution, you have to figure out the root cause of the unburned fuel otherwise the new cats will not last that long.

you could go to any parts store and just ask the parts guy to scan your truck for any pending codes. sometimes they are hesitant when the check/service engine light is not on.

I have a odb scan tool on my phone that I use and nothing is showing up, no codes and the truck runs fine, I am still getting 20-23mpg on the highway and around 16city . I know it could use plugs and wires which I was going to do , I've done a oil change, i'll start with plugs and wires and go from there .

Otherwise , what are some good budget cats that I could purchase ,or within the state of Michigan I don't need cats should I just go straight through and have them removed ?

We don't have emissions, I also though about going Highflow, or if I were to keep something there getting too glass packs , I mainly don't want to loose power or mpg, and throw any codes .
