Hi all,

New to the forum, so please bear with the "noobness".

My X is a 4x4 v8 w/ auto tranny. For about a month, the gear shifter has been uncooperative. When going from drive to park, the shift lever will get stuck at reverse. Only if I jiggle the lever will the truck actually go into park. When going only from reverse to park, there is no trouble. The truck seems to change gears perfectly when driving.

Before I go to the mechanic, I would appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks.

Sounds like either a cable problem or possibly a problem within the shifter mechanism itself. Probably a little more than a DIYer would want to handle.

I had a similar problem. It is probably the shift lock actuator. It is what allows disengagement from "park" only with the brake pedal depressed. It has been replaced twice on my Mtneer, the symptoms were similar to what you described.

This problem scares me - seems difficult and expensive, and since I am keeping my Ex till it drops, I expect I may get into this someday.

There was a thread on this item many months ago, where a member was trying to engineer a replacement part for a casting that had broken inside the top hub of his steering column.

Or maybe I am mixing these issues up (getting old).

If I recall correctly it was $200 repair including parts, whether it's difficult or not I can't say but it seemed to have been repaired correctly without too much trouble. It did fail a second time though the actuator seems to be poorly made.

I had my 2006 4x4 at the dealer today for the same proble. It would randomly not want to come out of park. It happened very infrequently, but enough that it was annoying. The dealership had it all day and called today and told me that the replacement part was no longer used and that a new "redesigned" part was needed and ordered from Detroit. The current instock replacement part was failing. I hope they get it right...
