04 cruse and a dieing engine

Hi New here , just bought a 04 explorer. Had it out today and the motor would die sometimes when i had the cruse control on. Put in N or park and it would start bach up and run i would put in D and take off , when i pushed the resume it died again. It did this 2 or 4 times with some driving time between each incident. Switched cruse off and it did not die the rest of the way home .
this is something it has not done before.I thought it unusual that i did not have to turn the cruse on after the EX died just reset the cruse. Any thoughts or help

You may have an issue with your pressure switch located at the master cylinder.

i agree on the switch located on top of the brake master cylinder. replaced mine about $23 and 2 minutes.

is the engine shutting down? if so clean the throttle body.

Yes the engine shuts down after i stop ,get to speed and push the resume button to resume using the cruise thats when it dies.

I had this happen to me today. Was driving along at 35MPH with cruise on and all of a sudden engine shut off. I was lucky I was in the right lane and coasted to a stop. Put it in neutral and it fired right up. No problems the rest of the day, but I didn't use the cruise either. Mine is a 2005 4WD and I don't think I have the switch on top of the master cylinder. Are there switches under the dash?

I just don't think that the switch on the brake would shut off the engine . My engine dies when the resume button is activated (pressed)

My cruise causes my engine to die when set at speeds under 50MPH and going downhill. Have had my 2004 since it was a year old and it always did this.

if you set cruise below 40mph it will try and slow you down till it kills the engine.

For some reason the X doesn't deactivate the Cruise system like other cars/trucks below a set speed. With my heep, can't turn it on below 44mph and it turns it self off the speed drops below that point. I only use it on the highway anyways.

WoW!! This is VERY Helpful info! I was going to take mine out today and do some testing. I will check this out and try and confirm it. Thanks!

This is your answer. But, if you are anything over 60,000 miles, clean the throttle body & elbow. It will already have an oily build up in.

The X/Monty is only Ford I have ever owned that won't let you cruise below 45. Any car for that matter.

Well I took my 2005 Explorer out today. At 55MPH I turned on the cruise and hit the set button. Worked PERFECT! This was on a VERY hilly area (I live in a mountain-hilly region) and it accelerated and decererated exactly as it's supposed to do. Seems like jrford has nailed the situation with his post. Since I really have no use for cruise around town, this is a "problem solved" and saves me wasting $$$ at a dealer trying to solve a problem that can't be solved. I agree, though, it is strange that the Explorer works this way. My 2005 Chevy Silverado pickup can have the cruise set at 25MPH and it will stay at that speed with no problems. Of course, I have a different problem with that vehicle of EVERY gauge not working with the exception of the tach. Plus a clunk in the steering column since 10,000 miles. I know the fixes for both, but I will NOT buy another Chevy anything in my lifetime. :thumbdwn:
