Good Morning!

We purchased a 2004 Ford Explorer V8 Limited last week (88k miles, regular service record, interior/exterior meticulously clean for a 11 year old vehicle). So far she drives like a dream but yesterday we did hear two odd noises, on successive upshifts (from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th) there was a 'tinny' scraping noise, like a stiff wire against a tin can, lasting about a second during each upshift. I can't replicate it - we've driven probably 200 miles in the last week and it just happened on successive upshifts that one time. Any ideas what it might be and if I should be concerned?

Second question: I understand this model year has some transmission issues. I looked on the door pillar and I have code "V" for the transmission which is not in my manual, but looking online "V" is 5R55S. Does that sound right?

Thanks,

Philip

I'd just move on unless you have other symptoms. Could have a shop drop the trans pan and do a filter fluid change (not a flush) and have them see if they can find any issues.

Otherwise, keep on driving. Learn to love the car, so when you put money into it, it'll be out of love. Go to any forum for most cars and you'll see they all "have" issues.

Welcome to the forum. And welcome to the Ford Explorer. We're all a little crazy here. I have 3 Explorers and one Mountaineer.
