Hey guys,

I have the v8 4.6l Explorer 2004 and I just bought this intake kit.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...RK:MEWN:IT&viewitem=&item=220132477444&rd=1,1

I just really dont know how its going to hook up? I have pics of my engine. Does the Adapter connect to something inside of the airbox? I really dont understand. Maybe somebody can explain or point to it on MS paint?

Heres my engine bay:

it doesnt look like any of that is gonna fit your engine....and i dont that ive ever seen an air box like that... ive always delt with mustangs and can tell you pretty much anything about em, but i've never seen a one piece molded MAF sensor that is connected to the air box like that...

long story short. no, it wont fit...unless you get a MAF sensor off of another explorer that has the kind that bolts to the air box

You should see some screws that hold the MAF casing to your stock air filter box. If you take those out, screw the adapter to them and place the new filter on the adapter it should work.

At least that's how it is on my 02 4.6L.

Hope this helps.

the MAF on the 04s + are molded into the airbox. you will need to remove the MAF sensor and install it on your new intake. make sure its the exact diameter tubing at the MAF sensor location of you'll run like poop.

In that case, I don't think this kit will fit his truck. There doesn't seem to be any place to install the MAF on the MAF adapter shown on the eBay link.

That stuff you bought on Ebay will not work for your X due to it being meant for a conventional style MAF and not your MAF which is a slot-in type of MAF sensor.

You have a few options available to you to use this stuff you do have. First off you could buy a stock old style MAF, take the guts out and make an adapter plate (with gaskets) to allow your slot-in meter to bolt into the housing. Then you could use those parts with it just fine. I will attach a picture below of what I am talking about. Pretty much with a Dremel tool, drill with bits, tap/die set, and some flat steel stock from Ace or Home Depot and some Auto Zone make-a-gasket sheeting you can do this.

The size of the housing will likely be different enough where you will need a retune to ensure your A/F's are not all whacked out. I would say it is safe to assume that since you are doing a CAI then you will be wanting more performance from a tune anyways so that will not be an issue.

I have a K&N FIPK on my 04 4.6.......love it, you wouldn't regret it. OR you could go with KKM, or you can do like Rocket suggested up above

Unless you are a good fabricator and like to do it for fun then it would probably just be best to do what asimp said and buy a ready made CAI. You have a few options available.

when i saw the way this airbox was put together, i was suprised at how the MAF sensor is in one piece along with the airbox... if it was separated by screws, then this adapter piece would fit fine...i fabricated my own with the stock airbox screws.. excuse the dirtiness... old pic

Yeah, too bad in the 2004 model year the Explorers went to slot-in MAFS which bolt into the intake tube. One good thing with these MAFS is that they meter the air better than the older style MAFS did. This will not come into play in a lightly modded Explorer, but if you supercharge or turbo them then it will.
