I have a 04 mountaineer automatic transmission. The transmission worked great for the 3 months i have had the car. Yesterday i was driving and all of a sudden when shifting from 3rd to 4th it wouldnt shift. Its like the tranny when into neutral and the engine just revved up. I let of the gas and it would engage the next gear. On my way home it got so worse that i could not go into any gear above 3rd. So i had to drive home(6 miles) in the 3rd gear selecter spot. The od light started flashing and the check transmission light came on. ( they are not on anymore after i shut the car off.) i dropped the pan and this fluid is mint, only 3 months old, no burnt just pink. There was some gray pasty stuff on the magnet. I took the shift solenoid out after doing some research people say thats the problem. I just want your guys input. I dont want to buy a 250$ part for nothing. It also looks like this has been replaced, has a blue circuit board and some company branded on it. Also the harness that connects to it well some of the plastic protecting the wires is broken. Idk if that would do it. But inside the connecter where the wires go in the are 2 holes that are empty and the other holes are full. I should also mention that somehow the transmission was low on fluid. I had it a little overfilled but not much. And i never found any leaks. It was about 1 1/2 qrts low. 1-3 shift perfect by the way. Just so baffled how this happened overnight.

Did you ever find a solution? It sounds very similar to what mine is doing.

I took the pan off and I removed the shift solenoid and cleaned it out( I used cotton swabs then I used a little bit of compressed air to blow through the holes on it( I haven't had a problem since knock on wood). Also when I brought it to the transmission shop the guy said to make sure you are 100% in the middle of the letter d on your dash. After I cleaned out the solenoid I put fluid in and changed it twice to make sure that the system was clean. I also use full synthetic fluid, costs a bit more but the trans shop said it is much better at holding its integrity through heat
