04 XLT - Cigar Lighter (ACC Socket)

Hi All,

Having just recloated from the UK to Seabrook, TX - I decided to buy myself a little runabout in the form of a lovely '04 2WD Explorer XLT. High miles at 90k, but the service history is complete and its in excellent condition. Anyway, I have a little issue that I hope somebody with more experience on this vehicle can help with.

The Cigar Lighter in the center console (or acc socket) is not showing a voltage... I have checked the fuses under the steering wheel and all is ok. Am I missing something? It does not look as if the wiring has been played around with - so I am not thinking that tampering is at fault - is there something else I should be looking at before I have to start stripping down the center console in the heat of a Texas day???

Also, are there any service/electrical manuals available for the 04 yet? I have checked online and only found up to 03 in the Haynes.

Any assistance would be appreciated...

The 2003 manual would work just fine, there are only very minor cosmetic difference between an 03 and 04

welcome to Texas (heat) I'd say it's odd for anything beyond a fuse to be the cause, although I might try removing the socket and making sure it's pluged in at the bottom (not a clue as to how it comes out without breaking). unless someone has tampered with the wiring somewhere, it's 99% of the time a fuse or a relay...

I am going for the relay I think. I took the socket out today (twist and pull) and its all connected ok. The rear passenger socket works fine, so I think its a relay issue.

On a side note.... which repair/service manual is the better out of the Chiltern / Haynes pair? Also - is there an online supplier that any of you know of where I can obtain the cigar lighter barrels? Or will that be a Ford Spares only item. I have found lots of variations in AutoZone and O'reillys - but not with the three pronged connection.
