You need the OTC. there is a tool that holds the timing chains at the correct tension. Without it you are always out a few degrees. It also holds the crank at the correct position and the cams at the correct positions. Then you tighten all the bolts. No timing marks. Check out Streetrod2000's posts for a home made version. you need to trash one of your tensionsers to get his to work though.
