:banghead:Where's my headband emoticon for the title. Geeze.

Anyway.. Last week or so the lovely transmission started the 2-3 Flare issue.
It's an 06' W/ approximatly 100k on it. So, I starter reading. So far here's what I've been into.

#1 Pulled pan / fluid/filter change.. Yes, I read the proceedure here first. Got a cool setup to fill that puppy too. :)

#2 After some reading... Pulled pan, pulled solenoid body down. Tested all solenoids/servos (ohms)...

#3 Bands?? WTF, I thought they did away with those things.
Did band adjustment according to tech/tip post here.

Finally got a test drive where the issue went away.. WHOO HOOO!!

Well that was short lived. The next day (yesterday 6/3) I get home from work and there's the Explorer sitting in front of the garage.
Same issue. 2-3 flare, only more severe now. And seems to have an ordor of BURNT clutch. I hate that smell BTW.

So........ Back to the drawing board.
Any thoughts or suggestions.

BTW, lil history here.
I'be been a mechanic for 30+ years.
1st car was a 67' GTO, my first engine rebuild. I was 16 at the time.
Been in the heavy truck industry for the most part.
Don't have a lot of Trans experience. I do all my own service work on all my vehicles and motorcycle (05 R1).

Oh and thanks for the great info n here.

BTW,
What's the difference between the
5R55S and 5R55W?

One ends with "W" instead of "S".

Don't forget to tip your waiters and waitresses...I'll be here all week....!

Seriously, your tranny electrical connector may be shorting out due to the AC condensate drain getting it wet. Its a terrible design.

I had huge problems in the summer with high humidity. I got that fixed (dielectric grease in the connector), haven't had a problem since.

Sorry Bob.....
Strike one
I already put dielectric grease on the connection. I know better. Especially with the crap they de-ice the roads with up here. Eats crap up.

Well.. This thread went nowhere in a hurry.
As far as fluid is concerned, no it's not burnt. I checked it today.
That's as far as I've gone so far. Will double check band adjustment
and pull the pan back down this weekend to see where I'm at.

It's a long read but answers a lot of questions you may have and what is required to permanently get rid of your 2-3 flare issue. http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=318184
Anytime I hear of your issue on a 5 speed with 100k on it and all the basic stuff has been covered I immediately think that the servo bores are out of tolerance and a temporary fix is this product: http://www.fordservoboretransmissionfixsolution.com/ Of course, the way to verify if it is the servo bores is to look at the line pressures on the transmission as it goes through the gears.

Thanks for the info Flab....
I couldn't find that thread in my searching.
I honestly hope it's not in the servos.
We will see I guess. Still going to check the bands again.

I have an 08 and I did the servo bore fix mentioned above. I has definitely improved the shifting but I can still feel a tiny amount of flare occasionally. Most noted when going slow in a parking lot or after coming to a stop from 40-50 mph such as a stop light
