06 Mountaineer hid install ?

Well I have HID lights on my 06 Mountaineer, and I never heard them being illegal. I drive in NYC,NJ,Penn, and even North Carolina, and I was never stopped. Many cars come with HID headlights these days. And if they were illegal, then those who own Mercedes Benz, and various other luxury cars and SUVs would be getting tickets on a regular basis!

Lets put it this way, a plug and play kit, one that goes into the Stock Reflector headlight is in every way shape and form, in all states illegal, if this happens to somehow not be correct then fine correct me on that, but even then you are basically being a huge annoyance on the road since it blinds people. Stock reflector housings that were made for halogen bulbs should never NEVER have HIDs in them, they are one of the most un-courteous things you can do to your fellow drivers at night.

A retrofit, similar to what I have done to my car, while still "on the books" illegal, is usually not frowned upon by the police. While technically they can still give you a ticket, its unlikely.

Like mattadams said, cops have more important things to do than to go after PnP kit users, but if you were to get pulled over at night don't be surprised if the cop also tacks on a fine for the headlights.

Not only that, but plug and play kits look like crap compared to retrofits.

My 08' ex has a sticker on the driver door frame that says "may be equiped with HID lamps."

Did you buy it used? If so, someone that had it before you most likely put the sticker there to warn mechanics, since the ballasts generate a 23,000 volt charge to get the bulbs up and running.

Even if you didn't I couldn't tell ya how that got there, because NO explorer other than the new 11+ models come with HIDs stock, they just don't.

Hell just look up the vin number on your car and find out, you can find the original window sticker!

Disregarding everything above that, and only focusing on how the light looks itself, I don't know why anyone would think that this:

Looks better than this:

To each his own I suppose.

Plug and Play kits come in different forms, some are utter BS, others however are very high quality. The cutoff line just requires one to re-aim their headlights. Yes I do agree that a projector can tame the light properly but not all kits are the same. I ran 55 watt 6k HID's on my old Ex from 2006 until the day it was wrecked in 2011....Never had an issue or a problem. I did experiment with projectors on my foglights but I believe I needed a better quality because they were terrible haha.

I also have converted my 06 TL's stock system to a can-bus system simply because the driver side stock system died and I was going to keep it stock until i saw the dealer cost...$700+ PER SIDE!!!!!!!!!! My lights are decent in the stock projectors but I also have a canbus plug n play kit in my cars fog/driving lights and in all honesty, I can see way better at night with that set on than I can without it.

In my current 2007 ST i have a 55 watt system, properly aimed in both fogs and driving lights but i do want to do a retrofit....I have no idea what retrofit to do though, and I'm honestly ashamed of myself too being that I sell HID's and have been for a few years. Been selling them here in GA, the company i work for is actually the biggest distributor in the southeast, but we've recently been coming across pretty bad copies of our kits....that's something that's actually expected though.

diesel_s want to tell us what lights and/or projectors you used in your explorer?

Our in house brand, Xenon Lighting System. I'm running our AC current kit, very efficient and clean ballast and bulbs.

The projectors were out of an old Beemer, the ones I used in my old X. I hated the light output so I bought a set on eBay, I forgot what they supposedly came out of. Then I bought a set of converted fog lights and tried those, hated them. I want to do a retrofit on my 08 ST just because I like how they look in the housing modified
